Because many times people don't want to hear the truth. If it goes against what they believe, they'd rather shut the person up then hear it.

Welcome to real life-it's either boring and settled or interesting and terrible.

The problem of living with lies is that the truth will either bite you when you least expect, or you soon except lies of everyone even when they're telling the truth.

For the guilt, if you need to lie to save someone, it's best not to think on the guilt. Or think what may've happened had you told the truth, that usually helps.
