Well, that's my hypothesis, but the problem with ongoing experimentation is that you never really know, do you? Just kind of figure out a general trend.

Well, a controlled experiment is out of the question— you're dealing with a human, those tend to be... unpredictable. The best you can hope for is a longitudinal study of the subject, and hope to observe some causal relationship.

Any expression of gratitude certainly can't be harmful - unless you are speaking or dealing with the Fae - and I do believe you are correct. Anthropology does include the study of etiquette within a culture.
