A princess's birthday

I can't really believe it's been 76 years since my movie premier either! To think of how far things have come in just a short amount of time!

But it isn't just my birthday, the dwarfs as well and my prince of course all get to celebrate today as well.

[GASPS!!] It's your birthday? Oh, I can't believe it. I always wanted to go to a birthday party, with caaaake, and preseents, and musiiic.

Why, yes it is, Olaf! And well, if I had a birthday party I just know I would invite you.

You wear your years well....

[Smaug slides around nearer, fierce curiosity and false flattery is his intention.] You are friends with dwarves?

SMAUG! EEE!

[onebadapple]

Oh! [It's... a dragon. Like, an honest to goodness dragon! Snow smiles. Well, certainly a nice dragon.] Oh, you are quite kind to say so! And yes! My dearest friends are dwarfs!

[greatdragon]

[Oh, this was too easy. Smaug may be smiling, but it is hard to tell with his face. It is not a creature one should trust. He leers forward, his huge head towering over her.]

What a coincidence, I am familiar with such creatures. [Hot exhale of breath through his nose.] They are fond of gold and gems, I believe... [As are dragons.]

[They don't come anymore trusting than Snow, honestly. But she's the sort to give everyone a chance.]

Well, my dwarfs are quite fond of them as well. They go to the mine every morning to mine for jewels and rich minerals. Oh, but we live in a cottage a ways away. It's quite lovely, they've done every single carving. I daresay that there's not a single thing they can't make. I've never heard of them going to a market.

[greatdragon]

[Even better, a new hoard of gems ripe for the taking. Smaug sets his head down on his large clawed hands, as if they were having a normal conversation.]

A mine, you say? And where might that be?

[onebadapple]

I'm afraid I don't know, they never told me. I do know it's quite the walk to and from. You know, now that I think about it, I shall have to prepare a lunch for them the next time they go.

[greatdragon]

[A snag. Apparently these dwarves were smart enough to recognize this lady would give their secrets away. So they didn't tell her where the mine of gems was at.]

Do you find it strange that they do not tell you where they go every day?

[Well, if he can't have the gems, he will sew a few seeds of doubt. Turning the good guys on themselves, he could enjoy that at least.]

Oh no, not at all. They just didn't tell me because I didn't ask. I'm sure if I needed to get a hold of them and couldn't send one of my animal friends to get them, I could just ask where to find them and they'd tell me. They're terribly protective of me, after all.

[In other words, Smaug, they find her more valuable than their mine.]

But a wise and might dragon like you, why, distance must be a very different thing.

[greatdragon]

[Maybe she's some sort of she-elf, especially if she's friends with small animals.]

Indeed. I hardly take account of it.

[He circles slightly, his tail around nearly to his head as if encircling her to hem her in without being too obvious.]

For what use do they keep you if you do not follow them to their tasks?

Well, they protect me. They've been kind enough to let me stay with them. I tend to the home as thanks. I cook, I clean, I mend, and little things like that. But they didn't have to let me stay with them, especially since they know it would endanger them as well.

[greatdragon]

They must be growing soft in their old age. [That would be the only plausible explanation from Smaug's point of view. Letting a human woman cook and clean for them? She didn't even have a beard.]

And...if they should lose you? What then?

[onebadapple]

Lose me? Oh... I daresay they were quite upset when they thought they lost me. They placed me in a gold and glass coffin and tended to it everyday.
