While I- appreciate the attention- r-really, I really do, I'm not sure if- if I can handle something so so- so very- [Licks his lip, a nervous sigh escaping through teeth as he tugs at his collar.]

-Dreary. Not that I'm not used to that sort of thing. I am- I mean, anyone would be used to dreary in my line of work, the people- the families, though maybe it's not so terrible, I do like holding hands with them as they grieve- not that I feel, happy they are grieving mind you I just- just-

No I- Simply should not be in a place like that! [Puts his hands up, arms close to his sides.] Really! I- I don't know what I'll do with all those- those.. haahh- Dead bodies everywhere... Do they just lay around or- I hope not, my goodness gracious...

You hope they don't just lay around? Sounds like an exciting place.

... I would assume that dead bodies would just lay around and do nothing, since they're... well. Very dead.

But in games, you never know, I guess.

Anyway, do dead bodies just unnerve you, or is it something else? You certainly don't have to tell me if it makes you uncomfortable, but I'm a bit curious.

It sounds exciting in a manner I'm not quite sure I should be part of. It sounds exciting like in a way that might surely- ah, LORD almighty, how ever will I deal with- them all t-t--talking to me. I hope so too-

Yes well someone could do something about them? Someone, not- not me someone, someone else, possibly, hopefully. I'd guess I would be a good candidate to 'deal' with them considering my trade yet these days I'm just so very- hm?

Games- yes, right these are just... just games, of course. I suppose they're not- exactly real then, but then- then either am I, so, if I'm not real and they're not real, are they real to me... I- gosh I'm not quite certain anymore.

Oh no no no! [Actually he chuckles a little at that.] Surely not- on their own. I'm a mortician by trade- well, an apprentice rather. I'd certainly hope the passed wouldn't unnerve me on-... on they're own.

[Wow rude, his smile is perfectly welcoming. Ashley is just paranoid! It's like he can't even quite finish a sentence. Timid people are just so cute.]

[Well, he certainly isn't unattractive in his smiling. His appearance most definitely is welcoming! Maybe it, it isn't so sly? Ashley has such a hard time telling the difference between certain expressions. Honestly all of them confuse and unnerve him.]

[Though- considering things, it doesn't sound that preposterous, infact is sounds... possible. Many things sound possible- now. Many many, uncomfortable, terrifying, loathsome things-

Ah, you mean like people burying them or something? I'd assume there's one or two moral souls there to handle the corpses, in some way or another... If it's not already handled by the game.

And, I like to think there's levels of meta here. The muns and the games, then us. I'd like to believe whatever we go through in the games that muns put us though is real enough to us, right? So we don't really have to, well... Worry about our state of reality? [ at least not in comparison to muns and games ]

A mortician? [ think hippo think ] ... So you're someone who makes bodies look nice after they've died? Or the apprentice of one?

[ At home, death is pretty uncommon; or at least, being prettified is uncommon, so Hippocrates is more relying on what he remembers from books rather than actual, real life experiences... ]

[That's certainly not the reaction he expected. Peony was kind of hoping for a little panic he could have a laugh at - before eventually helping him calm down, of course.]

Didn't you know? Dead men walking need to feed on living humans to keep in shape. It's not like they make their own new cells, anymore.

Yes! Yes most definitely burying them, or burning them, or- why it's such a shame to cremate with embalming doing ever so well these days, yet if they, they burn they have no mouths. Haahh- [Holds his hands together, his finger tips touching from both hands. Index to index, middle to middle, ring to ring and so on and so forth.]

Mmm- Ah- then I don't like it then. I don't like it. I can't be there when I have places t-to be! I must- fix- fix it. Oh darnit this really is such a pickle. [Deep, breath. Nnnph.]

Dead men do not walk sir. They lay kindly upon a slab till burned or placed into a coffin. [Or, or talk to you when you're alone. But he doesn't want to acknowledge that much, no one ever believes him. Maybe he's crazy? Not- he, thought he was, there's no way he can be, this is more than that, has to be more than that. They're wise, who- who ever 'they' are.]

Though since, I suppose they could... walk now- this is really so confusing. I don't want them to WALK too, my GOD. What if they- they touch me!? [Shivers. Though not- entirely a shiver of fear...] Ah- I- don't know how I could take it.

... [ "yet if they burn they have no mouths." Eyebrows raising. ] Cremation is a little more convenient, if also a little less personal. ...

Well, uh, you probably don't have anywhere to be inside of your mundane's head, do you? Even if you need to be other places, it's kind of your mun's whim where you go...

And... mouths stitched. Is there something wrong with corpses who have their mouths open? [ Hmm. Let's see. Stitching mouths shut means there's an aversion to-- ah, maybe it's...? ] ... Do they speak, or something? [ he's not going to believe you if you say yes, but he'll let you believe he believes you, ashley!]

[Letting out a sigh, Peony gives up on teasing him for now. It's not fun to jerk someone around if they aren't reactive, and this guy seems like he's really and truly worrying about how he'll function wherever he's going. Considering some of the places he's been himself, he can sympathize a bit.]

You'll manage. You'd be surprised what you can get used to, really. Besides... usually in these places, you can't die for good anyway. At the very least you'll have multiple chances to get adjusted.

Convenient- perhaps, but many families wish to have a final passing glance, wish to look upon they're loved ones asleep, not dead things- not corpses. Cremation is for the poor and unfeeling. [A breath, sighing out slowly.] Hence my particular occupation. It really is becoming much more popular now, with these new technological advances. [Calming a bit on the subject actually. That's good, right? Good...]

Ah right it- it is... [Brows furrow. Surely that is- not a 'good' thing. Consider his mun is who... did everything to him. Recognizing that 'i am fucked' feeling now. Welcome back anxiety.]

[Also to the open mouth comment, his eyes move to look at him, wide and uneasy, staring for a moment.] Yes, everything, everything is wrong with those- lips open. Besides, you have to sew the mandible shut in order to stop the mouth from gaping open during the funeral- NO, the dead don't- speak.

[Eyes slim, glancing to the side.] Not usually anyway... Not to anyone else.

[Looks at him, his eyes looking over his face and he seems to look- more worried now.]

Why- why do you say that? Why are you consoling me? Should I be worried? Are you- are you lying to me? Why- would you- [DEEP BREATHING.]

Woah there, buddy! Do you need a paper bag or something?

[Or a drink? Starting to lean towards him needing a drink, honestly.]

I'm not consoling you necessarily, I'm just saying... you have more than one chance, so calm down a bit.

Well, y'know, most of us only have one life to live back where we come from. If we die, it's over. I'm not sure if that's how it is where you come from, but based on how nervous you are, I'm going to take a guess and say that's the case.

[He rubs at the back of his neck, still smiling but looking considerably less genuine about it.]

In these games, though, that usually isn't the case. They're games, after all. If you fail - die, that is - you can always just play again. You'll come back.

Ah, I understand. Cremation's convenient, but not that... emotionally present, I guess it'd be said? Still, I can imagine - my time is probably far beyond your own, but I bet that'd be among the first things we cared about if we really could find time to care about more than ourselves, for the moment.

... I'd worry about your job if sewing their mouths shut wasn't required; it seems like evident stitches in someone's mouth when there didn't need to be would, maybe... put people off? But if it's part of the job, that makes sense.

Well yes- naturally when you die you don't- don't come back. Even as nice as that sounds. Reality isn't like that-

Come back- [Trails off. His brows furrow. He certainly doesn't want to die, but when said like that-] It certainly- cheapens things, doesn't it?

Well they don't see the stitches. I'm not some mongoloid that stitches lips when I have a perfectly strong curved that can push through bone. A corpse must look as it did when alive when presented at the funeral. [Goodness, could you imagine how terrible it would be for a mother to see her son with his lips stitched?? How barbaric! He's a professional.]

Hm- I- yes, no- not- not think, anymore... Not anymore- they do... But it's-

not the dead. Exactly. It's- someone else... Someone's else perhaps...

Oh, so... Ah, it's like surgical stitches! Sorry, I was thinking like the kind of stitches you hear about on, like, macabre art pieces. Where it's thick string along the mouth in horizontal lines. [ haha no he can't since he... well he's living in the land of teenagers basically ]

... So someone's using the dead as a mouthpiece to speak to you, then? Maybe?

That it does. It doesn't make it any less uncomfortable, but it makes it less terrifying.

[Honestly, it's more traumatic to watch friends die than it is to be the one dying. The body sends all kinds of hormones surging, the whole experience is surreal - it's not something he can ever remember in perfect clarity. Not like seeing someone precious to him slip away.]

Not that I'm advocating just running around and dying all the time. Don't get me wrong.

-What? While I suppose some do consider us artists with how we- 'recreate' life, especially from more mangled specimens, surely we wouldn't-- d-desecrate the body- [A swallow there, his eyes glazing over. His tone is almost- weighted. 'Desecrate' said with an almost needy sound to it.]

That's just silly. But I suppose I shouldn't expect much from a layman. It's best our practices aren't exactly widely known anyway. Ah-

Hm- I, well- Perhaps, I, I'm not sure. They seem so- so [His eyelids flicker, brows raising as he pulls in a languid breath.] Kind--

Why would I!? Why would anyone? There- there has to be some type of punishment for death- you simply don't just get a free pass- I'd- I'd think. Right? [A glance down. This is all very confusing and odd. He doesn't like the idea of the dead coming back. Tings should be dead when they die, and stay like that.]

[Not live again, not move again, not- not talk again, feel again- need again-

gosh he's getting a little worked up.]

You never know. There are some sick people out there.

[Not that he should be judging people for what they get off on, but killing someone is just... a little much.]

But yeah, there usually are penalties. They'll fade as long as you don't go repeating it over and over.
