So let me get this straight:

First you were excited because I had a happy sex life, and now you're happy that my engagement didn't work? So you want me to... have sex, but not be in an actual relationship? Or was it that you just didn't like Tom?

Speaking of Tom, he wasn't 'useless'! Just because you didn't see much of him doesn't mean that he wasn't a very lovely man. And just because we broke it off doesn't mean he turned out to be a sociopath after all! Do you even know what that word means?

And for your information, while we're on the subject of men, I am over him. It was just uncomfortable watching him with that Jeanine woman because, you know. It was. John was clearly uncomfortable. So can we please stop talking about it?

Lastly, no, I don't know how he's back, but if he is, it's something Sherlock's going to have to deal with, and I'll help him if I can. I always help Sherlock. Yes, the slapping was helping. No, it wasn't funny. At least pretend to be mature once in a while, okay?

I am still grateful you didn't have a ring on. And on reflection, I'm glad you care. I just wish people would believe me when I say "It was for a case!" I'm not an addict.

As to how he's back, that's easy: James Moriarty had a brother named James Moriarty. He clearly didn't come from a very imaginative family.

[She looks slightly sheepish at that. But just slightly.]

Of all the times to comment on me no longer being engaged, that was not it. You were deflecting, Sherlock. That usually means that there's more going on than you'd like the rest of us to know.

[And she just gives him a Look at that, because seriously, Sherlock?]

And here I would have thought you'd come up with some sort of twin theory, or a copycat, or something along those lines.

Because I didn't want everyone to know I was going after Magnussen. They all would have tried to stop me.

[Sherlock just gives her a look that says "Puh-leez" in return.]

Who in that room would have tried to stop you? [Aside from her. Because she's the only one of his friends that doesn't seem to have an addiction to danger.]

Not always, Sherlock. Remember, there's such a thing as being too clever.

Jim Moriarty was not clever. He discounted you and blew his brains out. What's clever about that?

[Oh. There might be a small smile at that first bit, even if it fades when he mentions the fact that Jim- Moriarty had killed himself.]

[Excuse him while he tries to comprehend a compliment, considering all that has happened recently.]

The problem with that, is first you have to rule out the impossible. It's not impossible for Jim to have a brother.

[He shrugs.]

Until that is ruled out, it is a possibility. At this point, that holds the balance of probability over Jim surviving blowing his brains out.

[Cleverness isn't always a compliment. Sometimes it's a complication.]

It's also not impossible for him to have had a twin brother or a protege. And besides, you survived your apparent suicide; it's not impossible for someone else to have figured out a way to have done the same.

I didn't say those two weren't possibilities. I am, however saying that those are more possible than surviving putting a gun in your mouth, pulling the trigger and a bullet ripping through your brain.

[Sherlock still thinks it has to be something else. It better be, Moriarty coming back would be utterly dull.]

... he could have missed the brain.

[It's not a likelihood given that he would have needed immediate emergency care, but people can survive a headshot if the bullet doesn't actually rupture the brain. Still, there's all sorts of trauma, blood loss, and other factors that would make it a one in a billion chance that he'd have actually survived.]

[Sherlock sighs again.]

Balance of probability, Molly: which is more likely? For a person to have a sibling or protégé. OR for a person to survive putting a gun in his mouth and pulling the trigger?

The soonest he would have been able to get help would have been three minutes after he pulled the trigger. What is the likelihood of his survival?

I'm not saying he survived! I'm just offering more possibilities! Believe me, I don't want him to be alive, especially not if it means he's just going to cause more trouble.

[Excuse Sherlock as he gets a funny little expression. He leans in and kisses her on the cheek.]

[She saved his life - sort of.]

[Excuse Molly as she tenses a bit, blinking in surprise and trying (and failing) to resist the color rising to her cheeks.]

[He offers her a faint smile.]

You saved my life. [He reconsiders.] Well, actually no, I saved my life, but my mind palace projected an image of you and that certainly saved my life. Gave proper advice and asked appropriate questions.

Oh.

[She doesn't quite know what that means, not exactly, but she still offers a small smile at that.]

I guess your mental image of me is more helpful than the real me, then. I guess I should be glad for it.

[He chuckles softly.]

Less violent at the very least.

[His look turns a little more serious.]

So... are we good?

[She looks at him for a long time, looking a bit torn.]

Are you sure you're all right? Because if you look me in the eye now and lie to me later, I might do worse than slap you.

[He nods once solemnly.]

Fine. I mean there was that little four-minute exile I experienced. But I'm fine.

And I'm sure you missed us all terribly in those four minutes.

... though I sort of hope this whole thing is just a prank and your brother jumped the gun. Not that I'm not glad to keep you close - I mean... in London, you know. But... I don't want things to get worse than they've been.

[He stares at her for a minute, debating if he should tell her the truth. Ah, screw it.]

He was sending me to my death, Molly. "Missing" any of you was less important than thinking about how to stay alive.

[He pauses.]

Don't be absurd. He was sending me to my death: giving me an assignment that would certainly lead to my death within six months.

But most of your cases should have killed you. What made him think this one actually would?

Because my brother told me it would. He had initially planned to not send me, but after what I did... he didn't have much of a choice.
