Father! [And yes, that does break Arya, and she burrows into the older man, the reassuring smells filling her nose, sparking her memory, hiding her head against him like she was a child of far younger years]

How is your training going? I've been meaning to ask but I've been busy with the king lately. [He hardly spent enough time with Arya and wanted to. It was what a good father did; spending time with his children, as well as being a lord of Winterfell.]

[She tries to remember] Well. I'm still trying to catch cats. They're very hard to get hold of.

I'm not sure a princess of Winterfell should be chasing cats around the castle. [His face broke into a grin, as he was only teasing her. He ruffled her hair, as he would one of his son's.] Have you had any luck catching any of these cats?

Sansa's a Princess, I'm a wolf. [But there's a grin. Oh, she's missed this, so much.] No, cats are very hard to catch.

No, love. You're a princess too, being a daughter of Stark. Just because you dress like a boy and have a few scratches on you doesn't excuse you, my lady. [He smiled fondly and kissed her forehead.]

[She smiles at the words, even if she knows that they're not true. They'll never be true] That's not me. [She ran as a commoner, travelled with the Night's Watch, befriended a boy of Flea Bottom who left her, and travelled to Braavos. She was a Wolf]

If you say so. [He shook his head and pinched the bridge of his nose. She was a strong girl and he couldn't force her to change because he wasn't like that. He could only guide her, not control her. He wasn't like a Lannister father.]

What would you like to do once you grow up, Arya? I've always wanted to know.

A knight, eh? Well, lady knight, what sort of armour and horse would you like?

[He was wondering out of curiosity more than anything. Of course, it was hardly likely that Arya would become a Banner man, since being born a girl. Yet, she could dream and Ned found it rather sweet.]

I would have armour that bore our sigil, and my horse would be strong, and fast. The best horse in all the Kingdoms. [And it's nice... to remember what her dreams had been]

The sigil of the dire wolf; our house. Aye, I'd love to see you in such an outfit. What about a white horse for a lady? [He could imagine her on a nice, white steed.]

If it's fast, then I wouldn't mind. [She rode a white horse when she traveled with the Hound. She left him to die]

Of course. Fast steeds are often useful but so is a strong, hardy mount. Fast horses are no good if they can't survive the cruel winters in the North. Sometimes having a slower horse is better than having one that's fast.

[He liked to think that his words would help shape his children into better people. Good words were wisdom, he believed.]

But... wouldn't a slower horse feel the cold worse?

No, not really. If it's hide is tougher, then it carries more weight, yet it's more likely to resist the biting wind. [Yes, he was trying to act all fatherly right now.]

A faster horse might use up more energy whilst running and then feel the cold more after. Does that make any sense?

[She nodded] Yes, but isn't faster better for fighting?

Not necessarily. Faster is usually better for sports like jousting but not for combat. Faster horses usually have thinner hides and they're legs can't cope with the rough mountain roads, as sturdier beasts can. [Yep, the horse talk was becoming a nice conversation.]

You're better off with a horse that's equal in both speed and strength.

[She considers this. This... wasn't actually anything that she'd learnt in her time lost, and the information will probably be useful] Then I'd like a horse like that.

Then, perhaps one day, you'll have one. [He rested his hand on her right shoulder and smiled down at her.] What will you do about marriage? Will you wish to marry a prince and have children?
