You have been working hard—an evening off may indeed be something you deserve. However, using this as an excuse not to write my story? That is not something you should be doing, dearest.

[ she raises an eyebrow and smiles like the edge of a knife. ]

Making faces like a child will not change that. You know as well as I that an oracle cannot lie.

You win more with sugar than with vinegar, chère.

[ Mama has an air about her that is part southern belle and part television personality. It's not exactly a home run with some folks, but it's greased the wheels good enough to let her keep her crown. But behind that smile and the effortless laze of her voice, there's a monster all right. (That's helped her keep her crown, too.) ] An' that was hardly a pep talk.

[ Mama, for her part, doesn't shift. The same dark light that had shone in her eyes when she first approached this — whatever she is — doesn't fade nor change color or shape. It remains unmoving, perfectly constructed; if it is a mask, she wears it without seam, and if it is her soul (or lack of one) it's alluring rather than chilling. Molasses rather than tar. ]

You could always— [ She shrugs lightly. As if she was talking about the weather. ] —deattach.

[ There's a weight to that last word. A stone dropped into a pond rather than floating down feather. ] Plenty'f girls out there are doin' it these days. Makin' names, goin' places.

Carvin' themselves a thick slice of the pie.
