I wouldn't be so quick to call something like that a hopeless effort. Friends tend to show up at unexpected times... here more so than anywhere else, I've found.

I guess... Maybe I'm just being pessimistic but it'd probably take a miracle for them to show up.

Maybe it would, maybe it wouldn't-- I won't deny that. Even if it's only a little one, though, you should still hold onto that hope that you'll see them again.
