Reach three thousand years old, then tell me about young. [But he settled in, arms lightly crossed.] But you aren't kidding. This AU I'm headed into... Worse than Orgs, mutants, or Mut-Orgs.
They have these things called kaiju that started coming out of some kind of portal in the ocean. As big as some of the Orgs grew? These things get bigger. They destroy whole cities without trying. [And the thought of it both turned his stomach and turned his blood to fire.] I'm supposed to protect the Earth. Even the Princess said it was my destiny. So if it means facing off with these things...
Huh. [Yeah, Eric isn't liking the sound of that too much himself. He's an ass, but he's an ass who protects people, damnit] And this world doesn't have Rangers and Zords to deal with them.
They call 'em Rangers, but it's not the same as we know it. No Zords. Just these robots called jaegers. Takes two people to pilot them, and they have to... share their minds. And their memories. [He glanced away.] It's complicated. I don't understand all of it.
But there are schools. Academies, where you learn to pilot, and then you find who you're compatible with, and then you wait for a jaeger to be open for pilots, and then you go fight.
Figure I'll end up over in shatterdomed. Right now, it's looking like a good place to start.
.....Two Rangers share their minds and memories to pilot a giant Zord, sorry, jaegers against these giant kaiju things.
How the hell do you find anyone that compatible that aren't related? [Is pointedly not thinking about Wes and Jen, nope not at all, or how he wouldn't want anyone to delve that deeply into his head] Is that really something you can teach?
Damn. The mun's being shopping around for a place for me. I think that just got added to the list.
They have a process. [This, he can talk about. This, he's comfortable with.] You fight against someone, using a staff. There's a point system, everyone's trained in it, but there's this moment when two people are fighting that they can start to feel that there's... something about it. Something connective. Most pairs are related, or married. Or something... married-ish happens between them.
[Take that as you will.]
Anyway, it looks like a decent place to experiment with the idea, and even if I doubt I'd be compatible with anyone, well, might as well give it a stab, right? I have to try. To do what I can.
That's not a process, that's sparring. Hell, I've trained enough with Wes teaching our Silver Guardians that our styles match up to the point you could say that about us. That's no way to make some stupid psychic connection!
[Aka, Eric doesn't get it and thinks it's stupid]
[sighs] Yeah. Do what you can. I get what you mean there.
It's not psychic. [As someone with a little bit of a danger sense (granted by the Spirits, he swears), he can say this with some confidence.] It's just proof that people are similar enough to fight as one. The process of actually being in one mind - they do that with science. Some kind of... suit thing and computers.
[In other words, stuff that was pretty much completely out of his depth. Zords he understood. Megazords, he also understood. But that was different. To him, they were living beings made of metal who deigned to let humans bond with them. Not just giant robots that did whatever they were told.]
[Eric doesn't believe in any of this stuff...your lucky he respects you, Merrick]
So the psychic stuff is science. I guess that's not as bad as it could be.
[The Q-Rex was a marvel of science after all, even if it was science from the future. It was a machine, like the other Zords, but programmed with a personality. Which made it highly superior to any other Zord, of course.]
I'm still not exactly comfortable with the fact they have science that links people's brains, period. Not even Time Force had that in the future. Trip doesn't count.
