Yeah, great choice, mun. [His words are coated with light sarcasm, while a frown mars his brows. Akihiko seems more subdued and serious than usual.] Of course I’m glad the Dark Hour’s gone. It’s just… [He pauses, and then shakes his head.] Never mind.

So there’s a war going on in this other place, huh? [It’d give him something new to fight for, since the Fall has been stopped…] But I don’t get to fight with Caesar? Tch-! [His fingers briefly rest upon the handle of his Evoker.] Still, I won’t be taken down that easily.

Well, since everyone’s safe back home… this’ll be better than sitting around and letting my powers go to waste, right? [His gray eyes spark with familiar fire. Akihiko casually rolls out his shoulders and tightens his gloves.] Let’s do this.

[Because this is D_M land, Akihiko won’t be surprised to see his friend, back from the dead. ~~We’ll save the freak-out for later.~~

He smirks a little, and props a clenched fist against his side.] Not a chance. I’ve gotta get stronger – backtracking’s counterproductive. [His head tilts slightly to the side.] Besides, it’s not like I haven’t hit you before. How can you not be used to it yet?

[He'd point out that that mentality sounds like backtracking to him. But he won't. For now.]

You should try it on yourself sometime. See if you get used to it.

[Your logic is invalid, as always.]

Hmph. I only do it when you act like an idiot, Shinji. [hush Akihiko never acts like an idiot himself what are you talking about] I can handle punches, anyway. [All those matches that he had back in high school, no way he got out unscathed each time.]

[He goes quiet for a moment, and there's a small, subtle shrug with his shoulders.]

Maybe it's just because I know you don't change very much when you dig deep enough.

[And his response is instantaneous, stated in a dry tone. Although there is small comfort in something so small and inanely familiar.] Shut up, Shinji.

[He remembers himself after the fact, and shakes his head.] I’m gonna be looking after you, anyway, so don’t count me out just yet. It’s not like there’s gonna be any Shadows around to kill me.

[Akihiko narrows his eyes, muttering under his breath.] Change isn’t always a good thing… [And then he responds in a normal tone.] A lot’s happened since you… [He trails off, not wanting to remember that particular day, even at present.] I mean… things are different now.

I heard.

[As far as the multiverse allows him knowledge here—which is more than it would be in any other circumstance. But destroying the Dark Hour and all that it stood for had been what they—just like he once had—had been fighting for. It's gone now. Aki couldn't have thought the majority of his life would consist of fighting things that weren't supposed to exist in a normal man's reality. It's a goal, Aki accomplished it, now it's time to stop throwing uppercuts like he used to, choose which road to take instead, and start walking.]

Doesn't mean I need a babysitter.

[Akihiko quirks a brow at that remark.] Babysitter? Tch. You’re still my friend, you idiot.

[Shinji seems to need a reminder of that, since being dead has apparently messed up his memories. Just to help him along, Akihiko hits him in the arm, but it’s a light punch. Easy enough for you to handle there, oh delicate one?] …Like you really expected anything else.

[Being dead messes up a lot of things.

Here he can still feel pain though. He doesn't grimace, though his muscles tense at the impact like they usually do. He doesn't say anything at the first remark—keeps his expression as stoic as he usually does. Keeps his hands firmly in his pockets.]

[It’s something that he’s gotten used to seeing from Shinji, though he doesn’t like it. Who could blame him for clinging to past memories when they represent a much happier time in their lives? Even after the tragic fire, he and Shinji still stuck together, until…

The shadow of a smirk briefly flickers across his lips.] Don’t I always? [He waves his hand dismissively.] That includes dragging you out from your damn cave, you know.

Yeah, I guess you do. [He'll admit that readily enough. Tch.] You don't listen much.

[Though for last thing, Shinjiro doesn't currently think so, and the only reaction afforded him is a long stare that suggests that he doubts he'll be doing any such thing—dragging him out of anywhere. If there's just one thing they have in common, it's that they're both stubborn. Akihiko might be persistent, but Shinjiro's just as resilient. Aki might be able to lead a horse to water, but that's about it. He's been through that song and dance before.]

[His expression turns serious as he refutes in a quiet tone.] I do, actually. I just don’t follow something that I don’t believe in. If you had been around more, you would’ve seen it.

[Shinji has no idea what’s in store for him. Having gone through hell and back with so much turmoil from the Dark Hour, all the deaths that occurred around him – it’s impossible for Akihiko to remain unchanged, after everything. He’s just still used to putting up that strong front, still used to not revealing uncertainties and weaknesses. Even Shinji and Mitsuru don’t get what all goes on inside his convoluted head.]

Anyway, my mun’s still buzzing with excitement over this whole thing, so let’s just get ready for it. Sounds like that place is gonna be crazier than usual when we get in there.

[Aki should start believing in some of the shit he tells him then. Fighting for what one believes in is fine—you do what you think is right, and sometimes that's all you can do. But there's a line somewhere between standing up for what you believe in, and being obsessive and throwing yourself headfirst into things without looking properly.

Though maybe he had changed. Shinjiro doesn't really doubt that he has. The more things change, the more things stay the same. The more radical the change, the more you try to keep hold of things that are familiar to you. But a lot of the core things don't shift much, and while he can sense something's different, just like he can hear it in the way he talks and see it in the way he reacts (or doesn't), this is still a single conversation. Ten minutes worth of talking will never measure up to months or years.

Still, the remark makes him flinch, more inward that outward. He hadn't stayed. Not much he could've done, and while he doesn't regret his choice, there's always been a part of him that's hated having to push the people he cares about away and leave them behind. It's nothing he wanted. He had wanted to stay just as much as he was tired slogging through days that were always hard to deal with. Felt like walking with rocks in his pockets and around his neck.]

She can get excited all she wants, but don't get drawn up in it along with her. It's not supposed to be some sort of vacation.

[He casually shrugs one shoulder. It’s not like he doesn’t feel some excitement about the prospect, because he does. He has been restless ever since his memories of the Dark Hour returned. Although, there’s no way in hell Akihiko would ever give any credit to Takaya for pointing out how SEES might feel after returning to being normal teenagers.]

I know that, Shinji. Hell, if I don’t crack open any books, I’ll be at a disadvantage when the second semester starts.

[Stop raining on his parade. :( Akihiko is taking this seriously. He’s just… eager to have a reason to fight again. He can’t sit still, and there is little activity in the Shadow Operatives right now.]

Besides, I wouldn’t call war a vacation. I’d rather go to the beach for something like that. [Where he can make running more arduous by doing it over sand. He will never stop looking for new challenges to take on.]

University? [His eyebrows arch.] Good for you.

[And he means it. He'd rather Aki stop and just solely take on academics like he were taking on the world inside a boxing ring. But he knows he never entirely will. He's smart, but he needs room to run. Long miles of sand.]

But it's still a challenge, isn't it?

[You train during vacations, you fight during wars.]

[Akihiko nods, pauses for a moment, and then decides not to mention how he's felt about attending classes lately.]

Of course. Gotta keep things interesting, after all. [Definitely looking forward to that super strength... Speaking of which.] Hey, don't do anything weird with my Shadow, when you get your new ability.

[He's not sure what to make of the new abilities they'll be getting. He almost doesn't want them. Though it's certainly better than what he has, he could live with just being... normal.]

I'll think about it.

[He says it as levelly as most everything else he does, though there's still emotion threaded into his voice like tiny, almost invisible knots. Something more playful and teasing than he'd care to show anymore.]

You'll do just fine, Akihiko-senpai. Just don't overdo it...

Hey. [His expression softens a little, considering he remembers what happens to you after graduation.] Don’t overdo what? The fights? Apparently, everyone gets a new power when they arrive, so it’s not like I’m gonna be helpless.

You might not have healing powers any more though, and our Personas could only do so much for physical injuries. [Right Minato, remind him of what happened in April, why don't you.]

Akihiko frowns, and nods in confirmation.] I don’t, unfortunately. Which means both the strength and weakness are negated too. [He’s just going to miss his Persona because Caesar is awesome.] Though it doesn’t sound like there’s gonna be much real fighting, outside of the battlefield.

[Dude… Why the nagging?] Sheesh… Did Mitsuru enlist you or something?

No truer words could have been said, amigo. Still, I can understand your discontent at this new-found knowledge you have acquired. It's not always easy to learn things you would rather not want to remember.

What the hell did we do to piss him off so much? Minako and I weren’t flaunting our relationship. A good leader is gonna have to learn to be more diplomatic than that. [He may not be the main character or Mitsuru, but he does know a thing or two about leadership.] I don’t give a damn about his swearing.
