Mundane, this is hardly the time for you to reconsider all of the career plans that you've entertained for the last three years. Chasing after dreams isn't productive when the simple fact is that you need a job that will give you immediate benefit, not something that you would have enjoyed doing as a kid. This is a time where you need to think rationally about your current financial state and not solely focus on the steps you want to take for a later goal.

I'm not a good example to look to in that regard. I've had years of training, unlike you, and it's not an easy field for someone who can't keep a clear head.

No, it's not. I'm a consulting investigator, and my mundane has read more than her fair share of hardboiled detective fiction. It's no surprise that she's considering it right now, particularly since it's not hard to get a license in her area.

Unfortunately, she's not versed in any of the local laws and lacks patience. It will be hard for her to get far along this career path.

If she's following a dream and it's within her reach, why discourage it? Having a goal is as important as taking the steps to reach it.

I'm only here to be the voice of reason. She can do as she pleases, but getting all of the education and licensing that she needs to pursue her current goal isn't going to help her with her immediate problems. She is still working toward them, but it shouldn't be her only focus right now.

I know. People have a hard time separating their emotions from the facts at hand, even if they try to be rational. It's hard for me at times as well, but keeping feelings and opinions outside of the problem at hand is often the only way to find the truth.
