Sort of ironic that you're still waiting on a decision because you "don't know what to do," don't you think?

I mean, how do you think I feel?

Not that I'm in any particular hurry... as you know. I am flexible. But it bears mentioning. You know how I hate being jerked around. Sad state of affairs when no one can commit to a simple choice.

[ That's all he needs to say to get Gideon's rapt, undivided attention. He wants to know everything that Will knows. Being this close suddenly makes it an urgency. ]

What is he like?

[Everything in his life is suddenly Hannibal, Hannibal, Hannibal. What did he do to deserve this, of all kinds of hell?]

He's hard to see. He blends in well. He's educated and good at his chosen fields, but there's nothing out of place in his history. What I've gathered of it, that is. He's good at just about everything. He makes you feel good when your life is falling apart, comes as some... [there's a laugh, but it's so hollow it almost spits in the face of laughter] ...sort of guide. Some mentor. Gets your trust, reels you in, makes you enjoy his company and feel pleased just to be in his presence.

Is that what you want to be?

No. [ That's easy enough, but he has to deliberate before he elab... orates. ]

You sound like you know him more than just in passing. You're describing someone who had to be at least an acquaintance. Maybe a friend. Or a confidante. Hard to imagine you being able to get so close...

Yet still not quite close enough to see him. Until know, obviously.

I don't want to be the Chesapeake Ripper, Will. Because I'm not him. But if I met him I could see for myself what's actually me. And what's still him. Get what I mean?

[Man, Will has no idea what to do with Abel anymore. Other than, possibly, steal his copy of the newspaper (or share his, will Chilton let him have a subscription?) once he's done with it.

Which isn't really stealing. Snagging? Getting a hold of. Something involving compromise and sharing and being the best boy in the hall.]

Something like that. [No he can't really say any more, not without risking...something. Everything, maybe. He can't exactly have Abel telling Chilton about how Will said this and that about Doctor Lecter and ooooooh did you know I know something you don't? and so forth and so on.] And no, Abel, I really don't. You can unravel the two of you from afar. Drop him in a bucket and you in a bucket and once your bucket is full, there you go.

[ Must you judge him, Will? Must you? It isn't his fault none of you get him. ]

You're keeping awfully tight-lipped about it. Wasn't this your job? [ He's not mad, just disappointed. And maybe a little impatient. ] If I've never met the man, how exactly do you intend for me to analyze him?

[Must you kill people? Must you?]

You're not supposed to analyze him. [That was Will's job and also he failed and is that what Abel's insinuating? Because that's rude and he'd rather not go there. Ever.] You're not...you're nothing like him, outside of the fact of the matter that you're both men who've killed people. That's really all you have in common. You don't need him to find yourself, you really don't.

[Just like Will didn't, either.]

You aren't my doctor, Will Graham. It's not really for you to say what I need or not. So easy to tell me what I shouldn't do, but that's hardly helpful at narrowing down what I can. See the dilemma?

Try looking at it from my perspective.

[Way to be triggering, Abel! Will can't just turn Empathy Mode off and on, you know. He has to see it to...see it through the eyes of someone else.]

I think it really says, above all, that I'd be really happy if you didn't kill anyone else. Ever.

Well. Can't predict those crimes of passion. The bars do stifle the creativity some, though. If that puts your mind at ease.

Season 2: Hugh Dancy has no lines because Will has no voice because all he does is scream.]

Abel, I didn't murder anyone. None of those people, I didn't kill them. I'm—that never happened.

[ Wow Will a little defensive, are we. ]

Ah. Actually, I meant about me. [ It's probably rude to smile slightly. He drawls: ] Didn't mean to strike any nerves, Will Graham.

[His brain is on fire, he's allowed to be defensive!]

I'm really glad I wasn't around for that crime scene. I don't think a third time is the charm when it comes to getting inside murderer's heads.

No offense. You're not the worst offender I've had.

None taken. I wasn't going for the world record. Sometimes you just do what you need to do no matter how anyone else is going to feel about it.

[Why. Why, God? Why, what did he do wrong?]

But if those people lose the ability to feel because you've murdered then, it's a pretty good sign that you don't need to do that!

Well, in the cases of the people I'm killing that's sort of the point.

Usually so they'll lose the ability to speak, but it generally all comes part of the same package.

The only time you should kill is when your life is in danger. It's not...having no regard for human life, that's. You're going to be inpatient forever.

Thank goodness for you, Will Graham. Murder is wrong, you say. I think now I've finally seen the light.

You don't seem to really care, Doctor Gideon, so it's no one's fault but your own when you end up in Chilton's pound forever.
