You, too, insist on dragging out my story, right when it's nearing its end, for what must be the final time...

I'm perfectly aware of your intentions, Mundane-san. Whether I approve of them or not is irrelevant, under these circumstances. In a way, they're more dire than those of the Edo Tensei; I'm unable to break free from your mind. I can only hope my existence goes unnoticed. Fate did not favor me there, but perhaps it will here. And perhaps, then, I will also meet my final end here.

[this last part is said with barely restrained rage, each word bitten off crisply and through Sasuke's teeth]

[then his rage passes and turns to melancholy.]

[so many emotions when talking with Itachi. he feels betrayed because of all the lies and yet he can't hate Itachi anymore because of the intentions of those lies.]

I must make them pay for the choice that forced on you. Don't get in the way. Your time to influence the living world is past. Watch from afar, brother.

[if Itachi's bothered by the tone, he doesn't show it.]

[although it saddens him in return, that his fear of Sasuke reacting this way became a reality...]

I think if anyone can influence your current path, he can -- the friend who thinks of you as a brother, who has already influenced and changed many people.

[fool! they will if Sasuke comes back as a hero for killing Itachi, as he had planned all along.]

[his expression shifts into a look that's oddly reminiscent of the past, when he taunted Sasuke with words of hatred.]

Your conviction isn't strong enough. You can still be swayed.

[that last statement makes Sasuke's face contort in rage]

You know nothing of my conviction, but you are right about one thing. I belong in Konoha.

I belong there, enjoying the view as it burns around me.

I know that's not what I see in those eyes of mine.

You don't see it yourself, how you are being swayed by Madara, the one who told you the truth that changed your path. These are the things he wants to hear from you.

Tch, you see it only the way you want to see it.

It doesn't matter how I came to know the truth. The truth set me free.

Whether or not he benefits from my vengeance makes no difference to me. I would discard him as easily as any other tool if it served my purpose.

What a foolish thing to say. [to an Uchiha, who pride themselves on their superior eyesight. and to him in particular, that he wouldn't recognize the look in his own eyes.]

It made all the difference in the world, telling you when you were most vulnerable, most likely to be swayed. It wasn't a blessing, it was a curse.

[Sasuke scowls and looks off to the side, but he doesn't feel the need to justify himself at all, especially not to Itachi. after all, Sasuke had to hear from someone else the truth.]

[and he's right. nothing he says will dissuade Sasuke from this path. Itachi doesn't understand that Sasuke's doing this out of love for his brother. it's a twisted type of love that's corrupted what Itachi had wanted all along, btu Sasuke cannot go on without justice, not after hearing that Itachi still loved him all these years.]

Then turn your eyes away, dear brother. Konoha's end approaches.

[actually, Itachi does understand why Sasuke is reacting this way. his own love was just as twisted. and it drives home just how wrong he had been to try to do everything on his own, why his plan had failed.]

[he turns his own gaze skyward.]

What will become of you? Will you also meet your end, when there are no more obstacles to overcome?

[there's silence for a moment.]

[Sasuke holds no optimistic thoughts about the future, about living out his life triumphantly and living to old age. he's never had that in mind.]

We all die. I am no different.

[it also shows the difference between Sasuke and Madara. there's no desire for immortality or anything like that. the only thing he wants is his revenge. what happens to him after that, he doesn't care?]

[and the way he looks at Itachi, like it will be the last time they ever meet, makes it obvious that Sasuke holds no high thoughts of meeting his brother in some sort of paradise in the afterlife. he knows where he's going, and it's not the same place that shinobi who stay true to their village go.]

[another reaction Itachi had feared. he closes his eyes, head still angled towards the heavens, another place where Sasuke belongs. someday.]

[and since it doesn't matter what he says now...]

To me, you are.

[his face is blank for a long time, completely emotionless.]

[then he smiles a little and lifts his hand towards Itachi's face as if to grab him or slap him or something.]

[that doesn't happen though. Sasuke merely pokes his brother on the forehead and then turns his back on him to walk away.]

Sorry, brother. Some other time.

You that eager for the curtains to go down on our show, man?

Only my own. I wish for Sasuke's and Konoha's in particular to continue for quite some time.

Heh. Don't mean to be a downer, but one of those is gonna be easier to continue than the other.

One is entirely dependent on the other. I don't need to tell you which is which, do I?

Nah. And truth to be told, I can't say that either story's that interesting to me.

But they are to him. And I'm gonna help him write as many happy endings as we can.

[And who he is, at this point, truly needs no further elaboration.]

[It's just a given.]

That's what I'm counting on.
