[Boggs is silent for a while.]

I'm needed back there. Immediately. I promised Soldier Everdeen she'd have a long life, and she's going to have it.

SOBBING

[If there isn't anyone who deserves a promise like that, it's someone like her. Someone like her, who is the epitome of the kind of despicable it takes to win the Hunger Games. (Because no decent person ever does.) Who's failed so many people, so many times over. Who only gets people killed.

Especially not when that promise is from a dead man.

It'd been fast, so fast she'd barely been able to process what was happening before the Holo had been shoved at her. Even so, something had lodged in her brain enough to add him to the recurring cast in her nightmares. And hearing this voice, now...--

It's a long time before she can speak.]

I don't think they'll follow orders.

[When the shock subsides, it just seems ridiculous, like something that doesn't even exist. Having this conversation. Being asked such a mundane question.

Being able to dissociate helps. At least this time around, she's able to answer more quickly. More automatically.]

Fine. [Fitting; a ridiculous contribution to this ridiculous conversation. Because she isn't, not really. Who would be, in a situation like this?]

Everdeen... You mean Katniss?

Yeah, I do. I wouldn't call her a soldier though.

[Not because she can't fight or hold her own, oh no. Dair knows what Katniss is capable of and more. But "soldier" implied order and militarism, which were not things she associated with Katniss.]
