[The masked captain stands quietly, observing. And then he speaks but you don't hear it so much as feel his words. They're more of a whisper inside your mind.]
You are not prepared for this, child. You understand that there is far more ahead of you than behind. And that to leave The Nocturne without her captain would invite chaos among the crew and their donors.

I have no idea what vampirates are but it was too cool sounding to not not reply to
They're really good books

And a pirate too? [Rorie falls silent for a moment before breaking out into a wide smile.] That is so cool.

Most would not consider it 'cool' to meet a vampire, child.

[Her expression darkens just a bit, then shifts back into a smile.]
What's it like, having your own ship?

It is difficult work at times but satisfying. I am keeping my crew and humans safe by keeping this ship on the sea. Although, not all vampires are vampirates.

[Difficult work? She could handle that. Or at least try.] I want to be a pirate someday, and sail as far as the ocean goes. Dad thinks I should just do my traveling through books until I'm thirty. [Rorie frowns. No ships or boys (yuck!) until she's old.] Is it dangerous for you on land?
[Suddenly remembering her manners, she offers her hand.] Oh! I'm Rorie Lina Marsalis.

[He smiles behind his mask, a light and almost inaudible laugh escaping him.] As, I believe, it was told to Connor Tempest, you do not choose to become a pirate. Piracy claims you.
[He reaches out a gloved hand and gives her a firm shake.] A pleasure, Rorie. Most just call me Captain. And no, we can survive on land and among people easily enough. Many do and most mortals never realize it. They're content to ignore the supernatural or accept the easiest of lies to explain away our agelessness.

[Rorie barely catches the laugh and almost smiles, before pouting instead. Well, that would settle things if piracy had to claim you. Her dad would never let it.] Awe...I'd still like to have my own ship, anyway. Who's Connor?
[She finally does smile after he returns the handshake.] It's nice to meet you too, Captain. Dad says there are still vampires in our world, but it's harder to see them 'cause not many people believe anymore.
