Latest canon point re-reading of Storm of Swords ...
I had always though of Oberyn Martell as a friend of sorts, despite the rest of my families estimation of him. I don't blame him for what happened at the tourney. I was as green as our banner, and I could have used some more seasoning before entering in a joust.
He struck a clean blow, and I fell. What happened after that was not his fault. Although I was not conscious for it, he even sent a maester to help save my leg.
I'm sorry to hear of his death, but perhaps he can find some peace. I understand Gregor Clegane will be following soon after him.
