Worst muse ever to be getting a pep talk from

Really dear, it's about time you stop snivelling.

If you want us to be anything remotely active, you're simply going to have to accept that it will be difficult to encounter individuals about whom you know nothing, but then that's what research is for, isn't it, pet? You learn something new and I know what they like. But you best get on with it. As entertaining as it is to spin Mr. Holmes around in circles, there are many more people, many more potential clients and their secrets to discover.

So do us both a favour, dear, and get on with it.

I recommend Wikipedia.

Sherlock would recommend Google.

It is, isn't it?

It depends how much information you want. It sounds like you're looking for just enough to be able to interact, in which case a single article of the most important points is more useful than thousands of pages that may have more details, but that you'd have to sift through.

...part of it, I guess.

I'll take that as a compliment, Ms. Adler.

I find Sherlock's work fascinating. I suppose there's also a sense of satisfaction when I figure something out.

That can be a rather irritating problem sometimes.

I could, but that'd be boring of me... Especially when you didn't even ask nicely. Nah, I think I'll see if you can figure it out yourself. Though I am inclined to say on my mun's part, you have been rather entertaining to him from what he's seen of you. Perhaps you should try a game.

You're making a dangerous mistake, Miss Adler, you're assuming I find you entertaining. Assuming anything about me is generally detrimental to others' health; I would advise against it.

Games have an easier environment when it comes to talking to strangers. If you pick the right one that is. Memes anyone can interact with you whereas games are a group of people that are welcoming and will become familiar. Really, it's rather discouraging to see someone who fancies herself so intelligent to be unable to explain that. I almost expected more.

Honey, it's one of the many things I'm good at.

Utterly so, but don't pride yourself; I could easily be talking to anyone else. It's precious that you think you can read me. Spending too much time around our good ole pal Sherlock, I'd say.

Sometimes I don't need to ask for anything. Perhaps working with you is just rewarding enough?

'Entertaining' isn't the word I'd use.

Said detective inspector would be equally entertained by a piece of string attached to a stick.

Entertaining and interesting are not synonymous. Don't conflate the two.

Oh not to worry! I didn't even notice tbh.

[personal profile] noticing 2013-03-25 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes, yes. Now, no. Entertaining implies amusing, or enjoyable. Interesting refers to rousing curiosity or inspiring interest. Entertaining is a word used to describe something mildly amusing, teaching your dog to bark on command or watching Scotland Yard try to solve a case on their own. You might pursue something entertaining to pass the time. Interesting, however, is a word reserved for opportunities that seize your attention.

Hence why 'entertaining' isn't the word I'd use.

[ sighsighsigh so frustrating. ]

Then you and the Queen have something in common.

[ Anyone else and this conversation would be over already, but, well, this isn't exactly just anyone. ]

I assume you've already selected a number of potential clientele.

Making conversation, actually. [ lie ] There are better ways to discern information, especially from people so unwilling to divulge any.
