We call it an "Awakening" because arriving in Nautilus puts you on something sorta like a higher plane of existence. You get to be more aware of how reality works.

If reality is like dimension x, I do not think I wish to know.

Dunno what Dimension X is like, but Nautilus is a city. Kinda patchwork looking, since it's divided into districts and the buildings in different areas have changed to look like places from other dimensions and time periods. It can get rough there when there are storms, but it's not a difficult place to live in most of the time outside of that.
