Home means you've been there before, right? 'Cause I'm still trying to get used to the damn staircases.

A student there for six years, even. You learn the patterns they follow eventually. Random as they might feel.

Eventually. [ Snorts. ] My brother and I have been working on devising a method for calculating the patterns. Some definitely have a schedule to them that you could almost set a clock by. But some of the other doors and passages are completely random and can't be followed at all.

Anyway... six years. That'd make you... [ Counts in his head. ] At least twenty-five?

It's the castle's favourite prank to play. I swear sometimes the entire building can think for itself and it's just devising new ways to make sure you're late to every class. I'm sure Dumbledore found it amusing.

[ Twenty -- ] What? Goodness, no - I'm only eighteen.

That seems to be the case, anyway. Makes for mapping it a bit hard, but charms seem to do a decent enough job of relaying the castle's shifts in real time. I'm not worried so much 'bout being late for classes though.

[ That's what timeturners are for.

And oh... of course. And here he was hoping that her being taller actually meant she was older. For once. His life... ]

My best friend had a map of the premise. It's not really the best thing to use, though. He really ought to have handed it over to teachers, I kept trying to tell him it could be dangerous, but he never wants to listen to me.

He did, huh? [ Tempted to ask how it worked rising... ] It's only dangerous if it fell into the wrong hands. And even then, me an' Al would rather destroy it before letting that happen. It's coded anyway. We're pretty picky about letting other people read our research and findings.

[ And don't look at him that way alright. Don't even think about asking if he's thirteen either. ]

Years must've got messed around with when ol' Dumbles screwed around with his spell and dragged people into this world. Third years are ages sixteen through eighteen. I'm nineteen, but just had my birthday, so I'm stuck until the end of the year.

Mm. [ She folds her arms a little. ] His was... well, it wasn't coded, but it was certainly protected. Still - powerful enough wizards can get their way into almost any piece of paper and force it to reveal it's secrets. You should be careful.

[ What about a second, you look like you could be that height...

[ He gives her a reassuring grin. While there's still some weaknesses in their protective charms and such (all of which they're still trying to strengthen), they've done a pretty good job of making sure that anyone who does read it other than them would have a tough job making out what it said. Besides, who would find a few pieces of parchment discussing travel notes worth investigating? ]

From what I understand, the break down's a bit different. What you were probably taught back then's different from what they got now. 'Course, some of us also arrived with a bit of know-how that lets us take a few additional courses outside of regular electives. Alchemy's not quite how I knew it, but it makes for an interesting class.

[ She gives a small smile. Alright, maybe she can trust that grin. It's the same one both Ron and Harry use to trick her into thinking they have bright ideas 8| Boys. Why does she always trust their good intentions. ]

Additional courses, hm? On top of or in replace of other ones?

[ And the question she may regret asking: ] Alchemy's different in your world?

On top of or in replace. I went with the on top of just 'cause the more I can find out about your world, the less vulnerable I'll be.

[ And at her second question, he grins a bit more. ]

Well... [ Drawing his hands from his pockets, he quickly claps them together. ] Let's just say it's not 'bout the Twelve Uses of Dragon's Blood or transmuting lead into gold.

[ With that, he drops to his knees, hands pressed firmly to the ground. In Hogwarts, there would be no way he could do this without a wand, but at least here he can mange it. Thus, light and energy swirl around him as he slowly pulls himself to his feet. The ground shifts and morphs under his fingertips and when the bright sparks of blue and white fade and the dust settles, he's leaning against a rather impressive spear decorated with an elaborately carved dragon at the hilt. The grin he'd had on earlier has shifted into something a bit more arrogant and a bit more mischievous. ]

Let's just say it's a lot more useful.

I'm glad it's better than the island, Hermione.

[Don't mind him, he's actually surprised to be here at all really. His own writer doesn't bring him out very often.]

A wise decision. Most people would do anything they could to get out of classes they already know the basics of the material for.

It's almost like some advanced form of transfiguration. Only you could certainly never do magic like that wandless. It - Yes, I can... I can definitely see why that would be more useful to have as an ability.

[ WANTS. TO. LEARN. ]

It's... home. It's hard to get much better than that.

[ She smiles a little sadly. ] But it doesn't have everything that the island has, either.

[ HARRY. She will try to not look as happy as she is to see you :| ]

He's more stubborn than you and Ron combined when it comes to doing his class work.

Makes it easier when I don't know the basics, right? This world's way different from what I'm used to, as you can probably tell what with Alchemy and all.

[ He can see the spark of interest in her eyes and recognizes it as something he's often experienced too. Picking up the staff, he gives it a quick twirl in his hand before offering it to her to examine. ]

It's got similarities, that's for sure. Alchemy is a science that is grounded in the rules of nature, predominantly the law of Equivalent Exchange. This means I can't make something from nothing, much like Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration. I can only make something with the material available to me, out of like elements and of similar mass. I can create this from the iron and carbon present in much of the Earth's crust, but I can't make it bigger than the amount of material I have access to.

The key difference is that unlike Transfiguration, I can't increase the quantity because that's creating more out of something out of nothing. But I can transform it and, in a sense, summon it.

Furthermore, it's something that typically can't be done without a conduit. Kinda like a wand acts as a conduit for the magic within you, transmutation circles act as the conduit through which alchemists draw energy and use it on the items they're transmuting.

Well, I have heard the weather isn't quite so nice in England as in Atia, but I don't imagine there's much else to miss. [At least not because of the island itself. The people there, though...]

[As usual she has a copy of the Quibbler in front of her nose. She lowers it to talk to Hermione.]

Oh... I think I'll be going there too.

[His enthusiasm is a bit harder to curb, the smile on his lips isn't fading any time soon.]

[He lifts his hands up out of his pockets in jest, he knows he was pretty bad at times, but Ron definitely won most stubborn person ever prize.]

You seem to do a fair enough job with Ron, surely if anyone can whip him into shape it's you.

[ EEE she immediately goes to look it over, taking in the detail and the balance and just all the things. She can't even imagine making something like this out of magic, even if she won't admit to that out loud. Limitations, what are those.

And she's clearly listening intently, even while she's looking over the spear, nodding along in understanding as she traces a finger over the dragon. How did he even... ]

It didn't look like you made any kind of circle, though. Is it like wands that way, then? Some people are powerful enough to be able to draw energy without using anything as a conduit?

[ ~~Well some people are really good at it.~~ ]

[ She laughs a little, nodding. ]

Well, I can't deny that. I'll definitely miss the more steady sunshine. But... But it's odd to think of being in a place without some of my closest friends.

All that bad being the key words there. [ She's teasing, really. But she sighs, shaking her head. ] It's going to take a lot of effort. He had better thank me for it if I manage to get him to at least get passing grades.
