What exactly is this "prom" thing that people are talking about? There seems to be a lot of fuss going on about it but you haven't explained it yet. If you're planning on throwing me in the middle of it I'd appreciate knowing what I'm getting into.

From what my mundane told me it is sort of a dance or festival where people are expected to bring a date. It's supposedly romantic.

You dress up all fancy, get a date, and go dance to lousy music for a couple hours. It's crazy boring, and doesn't start gettin' fun until somebody spikes the punch.
