Cora's motivations are easy to guess: she wants to kill the Charmings and gain Gold's powers as the Dark One. Hook's all about vengeance. That stranger, though... I have no ideas on him.

You're thinking of Gregor Mendel. His work initiated the modern science of genetics. [also don't ask why he knows that. He reads a lot]
