Trust me, I know strange. You don't get anywhere in the NYPD without getting smacked in the face with it twenty times a week. But I don't think I'm the right kind of guy for these game things. Magic's real? People are being abducted by aliens? The place is run by gods who want to kill us all? They sound more like bad horror movies than exciting new homes for me. But look, I don't think even a big city cop's gonna cut it out there unless you think I can somehow arrest Godzilla for 1st degree criminal mischief.

Hah. Bet Holmes would get a kick out of that.

Yeeeaaaah, it can get really weird sometimes, Officer. [Says the kid with an alien bug imbedded in his spine.] You sorta learn to just wing it after a while.

Do they at least back you up out there?

Depends on what you mean by "back up". Yeah, there's plenty of people putting up with it, but not everybody cooperates, I guess.

For the most part, though, everybody tries to work together when they can.

But do you need to have laser eyes to stand a chance?

...if you get to keep them, they do help. But no, not necessarily.

Yeah, I've seen that movie too.

Like that. I-- [his breath hitches. he still hasn't quite gotten over this.] --it was an accident, the one time I did-- but almost all of us didn't want to, and didn't, unless we were forced. Kill or be killed.

Not all places are like that. I just... had some really rotten luck.

Oh hell. That's fine for a movie, but to do that to kids...

[He looks like he wants to bust them up really badly.]

It's okay. [He's only seventeen, but with his "job" in mind, Jaime knows that he'll probably have to put up with even worse things in time.] It's over now. And if I stop moving forward after that mess that just means they've won. I can't let that happen.
