We didn't want to be pushed into crossing that line before we were ready. I...before Kanji-kun, my attitude towards what we have to do to survive on the island was not the healthiest. I didn't want to subject him to that.

But isn't it better to do that with someone you know and trust? Geez, I couldn't even imagine doing that with a stranger! That'd be way worse!

I was alone on the island for months before Kanji-kun arrived, at least as far as anyone from home went. And Atia isn't one to issue grace periods for new arrivals. When your choice is between giving in and dying...for a long time, it meant nothing more to me than a means to survive.

I'm glad that you, at least, will have the option to turn to someone you already know and trust. I wouldn't wish my period of adjusting to the way the island works on anyone.

You've nothing to be sorry for. That is just how things go in these games. And I've grown considerably since then...I still can't say things are ideal, but I can be happy there. At least, once people I care about stop leaving.

I can't believe talking to Senpai was almost making me feel better about going there. It sounds pretty awful the more you talk about it.

Please don't allow my experience to put you at unease. It was different for me...I was the only one there, and I...let's say, when I'd first arrived, I hadn't reached the same level of personal growth as I might have done had I been taken from the end of things. It was inevitable that I would struggle. But because of that, and with Kanji-kun and Senpai there, I can help to make it easier for you to adjust.

And I'm really grateful for that. I'm still sorry that you had to go through it all on your own, though.

That's not strictly true. The hostel will allow you to stay as long as you wish, though if you cannot pay rent then you are required to contribute to chores in some way instead. But in terms of what you could do...I expect there might be something at the Opera House. I know they often put on performances and events and the apartments provided for those who live there are comfortable enough.

Besides, going out presents its own challenges now that the natives have become rather more hostile to our presence.

Most of them are civil enough. But there have been territory issues recently, and there always have been those who take exception to the special treatment they believe Atia grants to us, and our perceived ungratefulness for being so chosen.

I'm not sure being threatened to be intimate with others on pain of death is really "special treatment"...

Maybe we should offer to trade?

I think they feel we shouldn't be of a mindset where the collars are the only thing motivating us. That, and there is the small matter of revival after death, which is only offered to the collared.

But that's not really a benefit! I mean, it is a benefit, but it's not like we'd be missing anything if it was taken away, right? It'd be how we all normally live back home, only without the threat of choking to death every two weeks.

It benefits Atia to keep us within her grasp. And...it has proven to be of benefit in the past.

You and most of the people who arrive. You would think Atia would see the benefit of allowing us to accept her terms without being forced, but apparently she cares less for our willingness and more that we do as she asks anyway.

I suspect any answer I could give you would be one you would not want to hear. At the time it was a necessity, nothing more...but I suppose it could have gone worse.
