There wasn't much of a chance from the start.

What's that 'event'?

Well, there's this machine in Mayfield that's responsible for reviving us when we die. And a lot of us, um... well, we kind of destroyed it. So they were kidnapping people and experimenting on them because they said they needed to do some research related to fixing the machine again, but it was really just an excuse to torture us.

Halfway through, the revival was working again, but there were side effects. People would sometimes have their old wounds from previous deaths open up. That's what happened to me. I bled out overnight, and when I came back, a lot of my memories were missing. I think my mind just filled in the missing time with false memories of working for Nether Gate. It was terrible.

Really does sound like a pain.

I was just lucky no one provoked me, or I might have killed innocent people before I snapped out of it.

You're right. I know I should be focused on the future. On finding a way out. It's just... I never thought I'd ever have to be reminded of what it was like back then. Not like that, anyway.

Doesn't sound like something you'd exactly expect to happen.

No one ever expects the things that happen in this town.

I mean, we do, but they manage to keep thinking of new ways to hurt and manipulate us.

The ones who do that are usually the best at coming up with ideas.

Well, just that alone keeps us pretty busy. Aside from that, everyone who gets brought to Mayfield is forced to live with three or four other people as a family. I got lucky, since I ended up in a house with Miakis and the Princess. The Prince was here for a while too, but he lived in a different house.
