On the Hobbit movie (minor detail on the film, no major spoilers)

The Big Folk's version of Bilbo's story was lovely, wasn't it? Exciting as well, and as a whole, everything one could wish for in a good Adventure! Yet...

I doubt I shall ever understand you! The moment I think I am starting to, you continue to surprise me.

You were slightly disappointed the Sackville-Baggins didn't show up at Bilbo's door? Bilbo and I would have had a very trying time if they had come to call, even if for a moment!

I should think it much better with how it had gone in the story, and that Bilbo was, if only for the tiniest moment, delighted with their answer. "Frodo, my lad," I believe he said, "If only it had been as easy as not coming to deliver an invitation to them personally or explaining it off as the Quick Post's busy schedules: I might have saved myself from a good number of headaches!"

And what exactly is a Sackville-Baggins?

[and that is a good question: where to begin for someone who knows nothing about hobbit family lines, their intricacies, and in this case, problems, of which there is numerous - three SBs is quite enough!]

They are relations of ours; short on manners, exceedingly unpleasant but also exceedingly stubborn when it comes to getting their way. I suppose one can find it if they try hard an admirable amount of determination.

[dwarvling]

[And Kili snorts at that with a knowing nod. Everyone has unfortunate relatives, even those in the line of Durin.]

Aye, we've a cousin like that, Fili and I. Hoards all the ale and meat for himself, complaining about thieves in the knight and being deserved of special treatment for being our cousin. Deserved of a case of rotten eggs more like.

[iorhael]

[Frodo looks at him sharply for a moment; if it weren't for Kili being well, a dwarf, he could have described a relative or two of Bilbo's!]

He does not sound very pleasant to be around at all. It is very unfortunate that it seems this sort thing is common all around, but one can't choose their relations, I'm afraid.

[dwarvling]

[There's one or five in every family, isn't there?]

He's not pleasant at all, but he's far enough down the line to ever land himself on the throne under the mountain.

[iorhael]

[five?! That is far too many! Have a look of deep sympathy]

Well...I suppose that is something to be rather thankful for; they can be bad enough as they are, but if they were King-

[It sounds like he doesn't even want to think of the possibilities, but he has already and they are dreadful. And here Frodo had thought that the worst that could happen was hobbits going through Bilbo's things and leaving Bag End in shambles, or worse than that, the Sackville-Baggins moving in and taking Bag End. Having to worry about kingship? Goodness.]

[dwarvling]

[Well he doesn't have five, but he assumes hobbits might. They breed so much faster than dwarves it seems.]

A fate no one shall ever have to bear, surely!

[iorhael]

[and it is best for you, young Kili, that you do not say as much to Frodo's face. Breeding indeed, as if they were no more than rabbits!]

One can hope, but more often than not, luck seems to favor having a good laugh at us all. It could very well happen!

[dwarvling]

[Well if the hole in the ground fits...]

Aye, imagine that. A world where kings are every unpleasant cousin.

[iorhael]

[You impossible dwarf, don't even!]

I can, and I imagine that they would soon find themselves without subjects quite quickly!

Well thank goodness for that! I have had more than enough trouble as it is without having to worry about those Sackville-Baggins ringing the bell!

[he chuckles] I agree that the SBs are trouble wherever they go and whenever they come calling, but surely Gandalf is - wasn't nearly so bad.

You...your mun would want to see the Sackville-Baggins pop up on my doorstep? Perhaps you both haven't had an extended visit with them, I'm quite certain your opinions would change drastically!

[Future heir, you are not endearing yourself very well to Bilbo. Bilbo looks aghast at this idea, drawing himself up to his full height - a perfectly respectable hobbit height.]

Yes, she would! She seems to like them.

I have had the misfortune of having to host them on far too numerous an occasion, Bilbo. I know them more than a hobbit should have to.

[He isn't some stranger from out of the Shire, much less Hobbiton.]

(I find her taste in company highly questionable) I do hope she's learned her ownership of any and all valuables will be up to interpretation when Lobelia visits.

[That said, he feels rather sorry that this young hobbit has had to host them - more than once, even! Perhaps he was being too harsh.]

I do hope you have had a chance to recover your own, then.

(As do I...and any hobbit who has met the SBs) Oh, I think she would not want to be their host at all, mind you. She would much prefer to watch you or I have the unhappy business of it.

I always think I have recovered from encounters with them, but by then, it seems that they come by or I run into them, whether I am expecting it or not.

I imagine it much easier to find something funny about the Sackville-Baggins, when you are neither related to them or have to deal with their company yourself.
