and so final paper season drew to a close
Anxious about your final submissions, eh?
You hang upon Holmes' words as well as I do, do you not? I do recall a certain line about bricks and clay. [Never mind that Holmes was talking about something completely different, but ok.] You mustn't expect perfection at the outset, my dear girl, I hope you understand. One must first build the foundations of a skill--and, before that, the muddiest, most basic foundations of these foundations.
[Watson pauses, before breaking into a chuckle.]
And, honestly, do you think my own publications went to the presses unscathed? Lord, the editors--like harpies, my dear. Writing is a struggle from the outset, and I'd wager that's true for all writing, genre aside.
