Dæmons represent their people in a way. Sometimes it's really unintuitive, but other times... You know how they say people and their pets sometimes look like each other? Just because they're so much alike.

Mine's a sugar glider. I'm hoping because I fly and not because I'm tiny and cute and nobody takes me seriously.

But why are they there in the first place? What causes them to form? It seems as though it is not a representation, but a true part now outside of the self.

That's the idea. Common fictional trope says they form as some kind of metaphysical lesson to teach us about ourselves and presenting that inner part for anyone to see. Like, how we would or should handle it.
