It was maddening. I wanted them back. But I didn't pretend that I could do just as much without them. I knew my limits.

I was already most of the things I knew I had to be. Manipulative, a killer, capable of risking my own life to reap the proper rewards. But I carried a gun, and I didn't make threats I couldn't carry through.
