I'll have you know, young mundane, that some people aren't knights or made to be the ones who chase evil beings around. You know exactly where my place is meant to be and you shouldn't be fiddling with it. You have a bad tendency of dropping things, and I'll have you know that it's not the best reassurance.

And yes, yes, he's a grown man and can look after himself.

Alright, alright. Maybe not so much.

Some of these places look rather dodgy. Taken to other worlds through technology? No matter how many times you say it's science and try to explain, it all sounds like very souped up magic to me. And that's saying something. I think we'll avoid those ones for now.

Oh. Erm. No. [Merlin wrinkles his nose.] That's just a sign of his prattishness. [A pause.]

But you may have a point. He does go around punching people to cheer them up.

[Summoning the glasses to him and holding them up.] What, these things?

[Raises his eyebrows. This is the look that says he's going to remember this conversation forever and use it in a witty way later on when you least expect it, Merlin.

Or maybe even for a "told you so" moment.]

Ah yes, thank you. Sometimes I wonder if they have a mind of their own. And punching people doesn't cheer them up, but it easily sends work my way. [Nonplussed, reaching for his glasses thanks..]

[When that time comes, Merlin will just have to remind himself that you really do care about him a lot, even if you have this terrible habit of using The Eyebrows and The Dry Humour against him. For shame! He's supposed to be your favourite!]

You sure you don't just misplace them and forget? [Teasing smile as he hands them over.]

Well, tell that to Arthur. He'd probably just say the experience builds character or something. As if.

[What? You're going to begrudge an old man his Eyebrows and Dry Humour? Shame on you. Damn whippersnappers these days. When you were being born, Gaius was...doing what he does now...

In my line of work, misplacing things tends to get people killed. [Leaves that hanging as he puts his glasses on. Much better.]

Well I suppose it does build character in some way. Just as falling off a horse and getting back on it does.

[Hey, you begrudge a young warlock of his Arthur Complaining Time, so it's only fair.]

Don't say that, Gaius. [Looking around them warily.] Who knows what Arthur would come up with! He's bad enough without other people giving him ideas.

[But your Arthur Complaining Time is cutting into Doing Odd Jobs For Gaius Time. Priorities, boy.]

I just did. [Looks around, bemused. Nope, there's no-one there Merlin. Not so much as a faerie.] And it's not a bad thing, you know. Letting Arthur know he's right on occasion. It'll help him in the long run, and I think he'll need all the help he can get.

[He's got his priorities straight! It goes something like: looking after Arthur, errands for Gaius, cleaning up after Arthur, more errands for Gaius, polishing Arthur's weapons and armour, mucking about with the knights, last minute errands for Gaius,...oh and Arthur. Seriously, what more do you want from him?]

How's that going to help? He usually thinks he's right anyway, even if I say otherwise.

[The leech tank needs cleaning. :| ]

Merlin, sometimes even though people think they are right, hearing it from someone close to them helps reaffirm that. On occasion.

[Unless you do it too much then Arthur's ego will just explode.]

[Fine. Put it on his never-ending list of chores :T ]

He doesn't value my opinion that much. [But Merlin's looking rather pleased now, so obviously Gaius' buttering up is having some effect.] Oh, all right. I'll say something to him next time.

[Need more blinkroot too. And ragweed. Oh and some nettle leaves....Actually hold on let him write a list.]

If you say so, Merlin. I'm just saying to not take things at face value. We all know how horribly wrong it goes when we do.

[So much for having the day off.]

Yeah...I know. He might listen to me now, but back home I'm still just a servant to him.

[Nothing makes his smile faster than thinking of those times things went "horribly wrong."]

[Days off are nothing but myth. You have more chance of finding hens teeth.]

Now we both know that isn't true. Otherwise he'd have fired you before your first week was up.

[At least give him some time to sleep!]

But he did fire me before my first week was up. [Holding back a grin. And then Arthur hired him again, but details, details.]

[Sure he can sleep. As long as he can deal with the fact old Lady McCreedy had to deal with her rash in agony as he slept.]

It doesn't count when you walk right back into the same job afterwards.

[Oh that's just low. Low. If he keels over in the middle of scrubbing Arthur's chambers, he's blaming you. And Arthur. It's always Arthur's fault somehow.]

Sure it does. You just said firing--you didn't mention anything about him hiring me back.

[Just look at that cheeky grin.]

[Not Gaius's problem though. It's not his head Arthur will be aiming his boots at when Merlin keels over.]

With such wise remarks like that you must have an awful lot of free time on your hands....

[Gaius, you break his heart. You would leave him to Arthur's tender mercies? He thought you cared about him!]

Er--no. No. No free time at all, actually. [Spreading his arms out, like he's demonstrating just how much he has to do. It's...probably not an exaggeration, sadly enough.]

I'm a very busy man. King's manservant and all.

[Gaius can cure a lot of things. Sadly ther's no remedy potion for being a crap manservant.]

Mmhmmm. You do look awfully busy right now. [Knows how busy Merlin is with Arthur really, but that doesn't mean he can't tease on occasion.] Well on your way back, make sure to pick up the order from the quartermaster.

And stay away from the tavern. [gaius-code-speak for "stay out of magic trouble".]
