When I challenge people to do better, this is not what I have in mind.

I have a pretty good idea that their interpretation of "doing better" is nearly synonymous with "do your worst".

It'd be strange if it was. Wouldn't it?

That's not really the name of the game anymore.

It's not all bad, though. You get to do things you probably wouldn't otherwise, or at least I have.

Somehow that doesn't surprise me, from what I've seen.

I suppose it would be, if these kinds of situations were the first thing to spring to mind.

Something besides game-playing and the associated giggling, son.

I have a ship to oversee. I don't have time to be dragged into whatever this is. And the giggling that seems to accompany it doesn't reassure me.

Or who I give the pep talk to.

I have far more important matters to attend to than being dragged into these games. I'm sure they're fun for those playing, but those of us in them, less so.

I suppose it all depends on whether you find it worth the gamble.

To be fair, sir, I'm sure she's giggling because she's enjoying spending time with you. But I can sympathize with being dragged places when you have work to do.

It seems, however, in these games, we're to gamble with our lives, our sanity, or our well-being. I don't like that idea much.

I can adapt. I just prefer not to when it's not necessary.

Though I suppose being here does call for a re-evaluation of goals. Did you have to do that as well?

Spending time with me or figuring out how to torment me? I'm not clear on which.

But it is frustrating, the idea of being separated from my duties.
