[Oh, the teasing - he smirks and then replies with a 'put upon' tone in his voice.

[He pauses, considering her for a few moments.]

That's not food - it's poison dressed in a fatty, greasy disguise.

[He understands her tone and tries to play it off, looking away with a shrug.]

Fine. Waiting for the other shoe to drop but, otherwise, fine.

[The 'other shoe' being the moment when his most recent medications stop working and he goes back to the way he was. He's been through this enough times to know not to get his hopes up.]

[He doesn't believe her - at least not on the 'if, not when' bit. His cynical attitude softens some, though, when she continues to tell him he's not alone.]

[Anxiously, he rubs the back of his neck. The personal ties he so craves - interactions with real people and connecting with them - are still just out of his reach. The smug, flippant asshole routine doesn't hold up well against Kate - not after all she had witnessed.]

[The words are nowhere near adequate but they will have to do as they are the only words he can think of. Still, he wonders if she really will stay with him when he breaks down again. Was that too much to hope for?]

[Hey, she only mocks because of how enduring the trait is to her.

She grins, a warm one that she doesn't throw around all too often outside her circle of friends. A very, very limited circle.]

[She doesn't mean for the department. Even when Daniel was just her teacher, she knew how special of a guy he was.]

[Oh, that smile. That causes Daniel to fidget a little under its warmth as he tries his best not to look flustered and, of course, he looks exactly like that - flustered.

Her comment throws him for a loop and he answers it a little too enthusiastically.]

[The enthusiasm is sincere but the tone reveals a little more than Daniel would like about his thoughts and feelings. He is still trying to process everything he imagined - how deeply he had believed and felt things. The scenarios were delusions but the emotions had been real. That reality is a lot for Daniel to process.]

Heh. I mean, if you go jumping off a building again I'll do my best to restrain you.
