On the good side, Jack hasn't figured out that I still have the keys to the Torchwood SUV or where I ~~sorta wrecked~~ parked it. He's had to find it by now and he's probably explained to Rose why I never came home a week ago. If he hasn't, then Ianto must be losing his touch. Besides, the bags of coffee were in the back of the SUV. Ianto could have found that on coffee-sense alone.

As for Rory, no, I'm not making nice with him. The Doctor picked him, not me. Not so sure about that Oswin girl either after her 'Handy' comment. I've heard those puns. They weren't funny the first time.

Now what's this about being swarmed by rotting meat? Weren't the dinosaurs enough? I spent hours in a tree!

[ Oh, puns! H e h. He loves puns. But look at him being smart enough to keep that to himself. ]

Wait, I'm sorry, I must've missed something. Picked Rory?

[He may be the smartest Doctor ever for that alone.]

Yes, Rory. Rory the Roman? That rude nurse of yours? He said that you wanted his girlfriend or something like that.

[Sadly, Rory starts to talk and Theta catches two-thirds of what he says. Keeps him from dwelling on bad things too often.]

So I'm told.

I'm not having this discussion.

For the most part, yes.

[ A pause. ]

Yes, I did.

I'm still not quite following the "picked" thing.

Rory and I got into an argument. The Doctor later took me to task for it and said something about Rose that... wasn't fair.

[He stops for a beat, grasping for calm.]

You know I'll get it out of you or him at some point right? [Innocent grin here because yay future plottings]

[ Wasn't fair. Well, that's not really helpful. ]

How?

I was upset with him for replacing Rose with him, and I said so. The Doctor responded that Rory wasn't Rose, that Rose was gone, but he could see how I would be able to overlook that. As if I didn't care. I told him before that things had started to breakdown between Rose and myself. She was still looking for the TARDIS that faded out and left her on that beach with me.

[And he's quiet for a time. The Doctor can cut him deeper than anyone. This isn't his favourite subject.]

It doesn't matter. He likes Rory and dislikes me. Shouldn't be surprised. When we were one, when we were Ten, we always felt that regeneration would be dying. That it would mean some new person would be there instead of us. Turns out we were right.

There had been a nagging thought about that in the back of his mind that he had chosen to ignore. So this is how that turned out...? ]

I don't replace people, Theta. The other me is right; he's not Rose, his girlfriend isn't Rose. No one can stay with me forever, and I... can't be alone.

[ A slow breath. ]

And I'm sorry.

[And there the Doctor has hit upon Theta's biggest frustration and the wellspring for most of his dislike of Rory. Part of it at least. Theta didn't move on as the Doctor did. He was stuck on the slow path with a woman he loved as much as the Doctor had with her slowly realizing that he wasn't the Doctor. Memories, thoughts and a physical copy except for the one heart but a mind of his own influenced by Donna Noble.]

He's still rude. I never said you had to be alone. I wouldn't want you alone. It's terrible. He's rude and keeps trying to fit me into your form. I'm not you. You're the Doctor. I'm Theta Sigma.

And don't be sorry. You've got nothing to be sorry for.

[ He has everything to be sorry for. Everything gone wrong, and this is just one small piece of that bundle that he tries not to think too much about. It would probably break him if he did.

But he doesn't say it. Whatever anyone says, that doesn't stop it from being true and he might as well not drop it on them. ]

Rude? Rory? He's a bit on the slow side, but I wouldn't call him rude.

How does he try to fit you into my form?

[Theta is all too aware of that. He remembers and understands but has the human side to try to set the train back on the tracks before it veers off.]

He's rude. And irritating. If I do something you wouldn't, I get prodded at him for it on the why. I think he's finally starting to understand I'm not you.

[He and Rory are reallllyyy complicated.]

Doctor? She wouldn't want you alone either. You know that, don't you?

[ He gives Theta a bit of a smile. Oh, Rory... ]

See? Bit on the slow side. Give him a chance; he's a really good guy.

Good. You tend to forget things like that.

[The Doctor gets a grudging tiny smile in return. TINY. Maybe he won't put one of the strangling dead chickens in Rory's room.]

Yes, yes. He's a prince among men.

You aren't being chased by dinosaurs or having cuts of meat attempt to kill you, are you?

[ He'll call it a success! ]

[ Kindest man in the universe, he's pretty sure. Just doesn't deal well with weird and complicated situations. ]

No. I already know what it's like to be chased by dinosaurs, though. But cuts of meat?

[That's the best he'll be getting. Yeah. So there. Not like the Doctor talked Theta into anything. He's too clever for the Doctor's games!]

[Having a hand who became a real boy is not compli- oh wait, it is.]

Cuts of meat. Dead chickens and ducks too. They're stalking us and rotting everywhere. Or will be.

Good. *He smiles and reaches up to ruffle Theta's hair.* I like you. And since you're not as long-lived as the original, I feel protective.

[ Yeeahhh, it is. ]

Right...

That's a bit different.

[Liiiies. All lies. It's the simplest thing in the universe to understand (from Theta's point of view). Why everyone stares at him blankly when he gives them the rundown of Doctor's hand that was cut off, touched by most important woman in the universe and came to life as a person he'll never know.]

The dinosaurs were more interesting. Got that wonderful pear-scented air freshner to put all over the Doctor's things. It's not that bad aside from the whole trying to torture and kill us all thing!

It is for them to put us in their personal ant farm, but we've been in worse places. At least it's not a dungeon in Cardiff.

[He's still rather cheerful about the whole thing, and if the Doctor meant something else was rude, he's ignoring it with that same good cheer.]

That's what it seems like to me. They watch us and listen to us from what I've learned.

Ah. Then I guess, yeah.

I think a lot of these places tend to be like that.

Thing better on your side of the world? I've wondered what's happened to you since we ... [yeah, find a nice way to say 'since i was left in another world with the woman who loved -you-]... since we went our different ways. The you here doesn't tell me much.

Are you all right? Not trying to do it alone, are you? You know that never works out well for us.

[ They're both thinking the not-nice one anyway. ]

No, I'm not. I'm alone right now, but I'll find someone. I guess I've promised to.

[That's sometimes the problem when two people have the same memories or ways of thinking although that has changed some.]

We were always better with someone else around. You promised? To who?

I think it does. It's no fun to tell yourself that you invented the banana daiquiri! We already know this. What's the good of knowing all of Time if there isn't someone to show it to or tell about it? You'll find someone. I have faith in that. There has to be someone around or someone that will come there.
