It's a different time, mun. There's a lot more things out there than ~~thinking about missed opportunities~~ thinking about the past. And besides, we don't even know if I can even have kids with everything that's been going on. There's a ton of women out there that don't have 'em. I'll just join their ranks.

[She's got a sad look that disappears as soon as it appears]

It's the new normal, right? And I've...I've got everyone else to look after.

The baby booties? They're...for an agent. That's...having a baby shower. And I'm just getting them as a gift. For her. Since she's expecting.

Yeah, there is. It's not that I can't...at least I'm pretty sure I still can. Unless the serum affected me in a way that Howard and Erskine didn't tell me.

[A carefully bland shrug.] I don't pretend to understand anything about genetics, but speaking from personal experience I know there a ton of kids in the system who would love to have a real live super hero as a mommy.

[And there's the other reason why she's hesitant on children] The system got worse?

I have no idea what the system was like when you were a kid, Cap. But there's always gonna be problems.

Social Workers are hilariously overworked as it is, and with all this new artificial insemination and surrogate shit going around more people are turning to science instead of wanting to deal with other people's castoffs.

They stuck kids in houses and if you were old enough, you went to work. [She frowns deeply at this news though]

They're not castoffs.

[It seems as if the attitude has definitely changed concerning orphans.]

Well we don't work kids anymore, not in America at least. They passed laws against that sort of thing awhile ago.

[And as difficult as Clint can be to read at the best of times, he's studiously blank as he continues.]

Most of these kid's parents are drunks or druggies who couldn't, or didn't want to take care of them anymore. Some of them are born with drug dependencies because their mom used while she was pregnant. Others were abused or neglected. It's none of it pretty, Cap.

[Where Clint is blank, Steph emotes with the best of them outside of the war room. Her fists clench]

Who's looking after the system?

[Clint slowly tilts his head to regard Steph curiously.] ... the government, I guess. I don't know, Cap, you're asking an awful lot from the guy who barely completed the fourth grade.

And the government is letting this run rampant? [She's already making battle plans to talk with whoever's in charge of this]

Have you taken a good look around at the state of the economy these days, Cap? The school system, health care? The civil rights battles being waged with the homosexual community? The government is letting a lot of things run rampant.

[she crosses her arms and looks at him] You also have a knack for saving people. Don't think I haven't seen what you've done in that Battle for New York.
