Thanks. I'm glad.
Maybe it is my nanites? They have me pick up on emotional patterns and things other people can't.
So maybe that is why.

[Is that what makes certain people see ghosts? Did she have it too, when she was alive? She wonders.]
no subject
They were supposed to do good things like heal people and help them, but there was an accident.
They got released before they were ready, before their programming was finished...and now where I am from, everyone has them.
Sometimes, they don't do anything, but then, other times...they...they don't do very much good at all.

[You'll have to forgive her. She's from the early 1700s, and she hasn't quite picked up on most modern things yet. She only barely understands what you mean. Tiny things that were supposed to be helpful, but something went wrong? That's about all she's able to grasp. As a result, she mostly just looks at the empath rather puzzled, with a bit of a head tilt.]
... "Pro-gramming"?

If you don't tell the nanites what to do, they get confused and they make something up, but if they don't have a plan, they make it up as they go along and the end result isn't very nice for whatever they are living in.
no subject
[Really. That's about all she can equate this to. She does only happen to be eleven, also.]
My mommy read me a story once, about these fairies, who lived happily in the forest, in the trees. Normally they were nice, but then people started living in the forest too, and chopping down the trees. So the fairies got mad, and started making bad things happen to those people, so they'd go away and leave the forest alone.
Is that what nanites are like?

[Little robot fairies.]
[Rafe shrugs]
You know...I don't think they know they're doing bad things when they do.
There's no one to tell them they are hurting people or that it is bad to do it.
They just...think they have a great idea...but sometimes that great idea is turning someone into a rampaging cactus mutant monster and that's bad.
no subject
I think, I kind of understand that.
I... I did something awful. I thought... I thought they deserved it.
A-and I didn't know how bad I was! Not until someone showed me...
Now I just...
[She has trouble finishing her sentence. Too much regret, for 300 years of rage and inflicting a terrible curse.]
no subject
Hey, you don't have to talk about it if you don't want to. If it hurts you.
I don't like to see others hurt.
no subject
You are really nice.
I don't wanna see anyone hurt anymore either.
no subject
[He smiles.]
Well, that's good, right?
What do you like? Happy things and interests and stuff like that.
What do ghosts do?
no subject
[Maybe if she does talk about some happy things, she'll feel better, and be less likely to get angry.
She really doesn't want to get upset again. Happy thoughts, then. Or at least she'll try as best she can.]
When I was alive, I liked to read. I really liked it when my mommy would read me fairy tales. They always had happy endings.
What do ghosts do...?
... Um...
It depends, I guess.
Not everyone comes back as a ghost. It's... usually the people who died suddenly, or in a bad way. Most of the time, they just wander...
Until they can be at peace.
Or if there's a reason they stayed...
no subject
Until they can be at peace?
Where-
Where do they go after?
no subject
...
I-I don't know.
My mommy would say, they go, um...
[She points upwards, towards the sky.]
Up there.
When I was able to go to sleep, under the tree, I thought I'd find out.
B-But I... I'm still not sure.
I haven't found my mommy yet.
no subject
Oh.
Hey, don't worry.
Infinity is huge. I am sure she is out there somewhere.
Who knows?
Maybe you have to do something here before you can go up.
no subject
She's just not sure what that might be.]
... I guess so.
I... hope I can do it. And find my mommy.
[Aggie briefly wonders if her mother knows what she has to do, wherever she is. If only she could ask her.]
no subject
Can you think of anything you needed to do before?
Or maybe the thing you do has to do with other people and you don't know it and it will just randomly happen.
no subject
[It wasn't as much something she had to do, as much as something someone else needed to help her to do.
Because after so long, she couldn't do it on her own.
After 300 years of being blinded by rage and revenge... she needed someone to help her remember, and find peace.
Maybe...
She still needs Norman's help to see her mommy again, too?]
I think...
I might need to find someone else first.
