[Sonic had to laugh since yet again, somehow he managed to make a Shadow totally confused and perplexed. It made Sonic feel like he was still unpredictable as ever, despite how many times the black hedgehog had said he might've been like an open book.]

I know you're an annoying blue hedgehog who runs faster than he can think, jumps into the fray without really thinking it through and enjoys shoving chilidogs down his throat.

[Sonic laughed, then it devolved into a playful smirk.]

Heh, as a cop, I didn't think you'd make all these assumptions. Look, pal, the stuff I said about you? You were the one that shared it yourself.

It's no secret that I'm a police officer. However, it would do well for you not to spread that to everyone you know. I have a duty to protect my city, and I can't afford for my undercover jobs to be ruined because of a rat.

[ Shadow exhaled slowly, looking back at his portfolios. ]

All right. What did you want to talk to me about?

[sonicwind]

[Is there a desk? If there is, Sonic will go ahead and hop up and sit on the edge, peering over to look at all the papers.]

Since you're offering, I'm gonna go ahead and ask. Why a cop?

[longhours]

[ The black hedgehog narrows his eyes. Sonic sitting there is very distracting, but he tries his best to ignore him. ]

Because I graduated from the police academy and was promoted. Do you have any other obvious questions?

[ For this Shadow, there was no other answer... Revenge simply was not something he had been interested in. Maybe at first, but he knew, after living on Maria's beloved planet Earth, that she would not want him to destroy it. He learned that lesson himself. ]

[Then Sonic will continue to sit here because it's comfortable so far, and because it did irritate Shadow just that much.]

Paperwork is only part of the job. I spend most of the time out on the streets, undercover, taking care of house calls... That sort of deal. I prefer helping people, knowing I'm ridding the streets of criminals.

If I can't do that, then I'll find another way to help.

[Sonic raised an eyeridge a bit, thinking Shadow still didn't get why he had asked his question at all. But maybe Shadow did and was just giving him somewhat generic answers.]

You're still carrying a badge either way, Shadow. But I guess it works, if you're helpin' people somehow, so I'm not gonna fight you on that.

[ Ordering his pages, Shadow moved onto the next portfolio. He didn't think that Sonic needed to really know his reasons for becoming an officer. ]

I'm not Lieutenant, but I'm working towards it if I can. Currently 4th Division Station Square officer, primarily homicide with undercover work on the side. My partner is Sonic Maurice Hedgehog, 4th Division, undercover officer. He'll work homicide if I call him to join me, but that's usually unlikely. He's primarily on the streets, patrolling.

[ There's a pause, and Shadow suddenly takes on a solemn expression. ]

From time to time. This is real life, after all. Sometimes the... bad guy gets away. Someone will always be made to cry.

[ It could be said that his own case ran cold... All those years ago. No one would look into it, many probably don't know it exists. This was a burden that Shadow would have to bear. ]/small>

[Perhaps it was inevitable, as much as either of them tried to fight things like that. Sonic nodded, seeing the expanse of documents on the desk, not sure if he liked the idea of people being on paper and then only existing on paper since cases went unsolved, shoved into a box and never thought of again since it was deemed hopeless. The paperwork was necessary for records, sure, but it seemed so... clinical and again, cold.

But he knew Shadow knew better than that. Cases may have run cold, but inside Shadow was always that fire to do everything in his power to help everyone he could.

Sonic was also just not sure if Shadow would ever find peace with himself if he was always chasing something. Maybe he couldn't afford to or didn't want to.]

I bet he tells you not to give up and picks you up when you're down.
