Oh please. Subjecting yourself to some bullshit crusade against all bad guys? All you hero types have some sob story, same as most of us. We just handle it in different ways.
Well, they're not gonna flock around your ankles. But I guarantee you're the guy they think of when they need to imagine someone to scare the monsters away.
See...I actually went to a Gotham once. It was post some giant disaster and the whole city was in chaos. Bad guys had taken over part of the city, dividing it up crime family style. We were there by accident, but no way could we not help. So we started ferrying survivors out, back behind the police barricades. I'm in there half a day when I find my first large group. Maybe ten families. I told them I could get them past the barricades safely, and everyone said, "take our kids first."
So there I was with a carful of littles, maybe halfway to safety, when the Bat Signal comes on for the first time in weeks. I stop and we all look up, and--well, he wasn't you you, but he was a you. At this point everyone had thought you were dead. But there you were. And the kidsquees were deafening.
I guess what I'm saying is, there's lotsa different ways to be adored.
