Mun's been playing Fallout New Vegas recently and has finally gotten through all the DLC stories.

Terrifying, isn't it? Takes place in the same timeframe as our reality, and yet they're blissfully ignorant of anything beyond Earth, but only because they bombed themselves back to the stone age.

This is exactly why I chose destruction for the Reapers. The Nuclear bomb was such a huge threat that the only way to keep them in check was to use it as a deterrent against others with the same weapon. For us, the advent of Mass Effect technology quickly made nukes obsolete. Still horribly destructive, but when an entire nation - if not an entire species - can just pick up and find another planet, it kind of loses its teeth.

The Turian Armada kind of helped keep some of our warmongers in check after the First Contact war.

Still, the Reapers are like our version of the nuke. Capable of erasing society on a galactic level instead of just a planetary one. Yeah, arguments can be made that control of the Reapers could be a deterrent against further galactic wars but... well, I think your narrator said it best.

War.... War never changes.
