So, you say you don't like it when bashers characterize me as an unfaithful flirt who uses guys, right, mun? Then why are you doing this? First you're all for having me show off the mermaid spell in the dunking booth for the playful appeal. And now you're offering to have me kiss as many random boys as it takes to make someone jealous.

Sure, extenuating circumstances, for a good cause, but it still doesn't look good. Especially as I know you'll have the kissing thing come back to bite me when Terry gets here. ~~If he ever does.~~

Who are you making jealous?

A boy named Danny. He's under a love spell, and according to his best friend, the way they broke it last time was to have the object of his affection break his heart by kissing another boy. The girl's not here, but I've offered to dress up like her.

... That sounds really convoluted.

There's no other way to break it?

Well, it's the first that was suggested and known to work. Wally's suggested faking photos of her kissing a guy instead; if that doesn't work, and a fake doesn't work, we'll have to try other things.

Danny- he can't go on like this. He's not only obsessing over Sam to a stalkerish degree, he's being really hurtful to his friends. This needs to end before he says or does something that someone can't recover from.

Especially in Nautilus. He loves to put us in embarrassing positions. Preferably broadcast for everyone else to see live.

Not sure where that is. But I can definitely say I know the feeling.

Especially when your boyfriend sort of knows how to hack security feeds too.

Okay, well. So long as you're careful. Things like that can get dangerous, you shouldn't put yourself at risk.

A bit late for that. I've already made enemies of an evil AI and an omnicidal alien. This can't be any more dangerous.

It's the city where my game's set. But the city's also alive, and sentient... and has a really bad sense of humor.

One good thing, though; I don't think the network can be hacked.

[Yeah he doesn't like it but hey Terry weren't you actually dating someone else for a while in a game? Never mind that you'd been there for almost a year and Dana was nowhere in sight. So you really can't say anything. He doesn't look happy about it all the same.]

Dana! How -- why, what happened?

For the first, I went to a party held at the wrong place and wrong time, and it went downhill from there. We've got a sort of truce now, though; I keep out of her territory, she doesn't test random residents. Though I think she's going to send her birds after my cat once they can fly...

[And no more flippant tone.]

The alien... I blew up her ship. I was trying to get her to put all the blame on me, and not the rest of Nautilus, but I don't think it worked.

Yup. It's what anyone can do, if they progress far enough... or so I'm told.

I'm not even sure if that makes sense, let alone whether or not I can believe it.

[ This moment as she tries to wrap her head around that. ]

Why were you the one running the risks, you're a civilian, you shouldn't have been. Are there no superheroes or cops or, or anyone else who could take care of that?

Nice to know that you appreciate me. Sometimes it can be hard to tell. [That's said in a playful tone.] Though, I'm also getting a new appreciation for what your job's like.

[THAT SOUNDS A LITTLE MORE THREATENING TO HIS EARS THAN SHE PROBABLY MEANT IT.]

We were at war with a god-like being that was trying to destroy our city and everyone in it. Most people were focused on that. There aren't any cops, Wally was dead, and Batman- [Her tone darkens] He was too busy trying to stop us from killing the enemy while it was about to wipe us out without an alternate plan to even check if the alien was dangerous.

Besides. I'm tired of being a civilian and leaving it to other people. I'm tired of feeling helpless. Taking matters into my own hands without other input isn't right, I know that now, but I'm not just going to sit around and wait for someone else to handle things. There aren't enough people in Nautilus to let me do that, and back in Gotham... that's how it got so bad, I'm sure. We were all so used to waiting for Batman that when he disappeared, we'd forgotten how to stand up for ourselves.

I'm looking after Bruce Wayne, part time. Only he's about a tenth as old as he is in our time. [Smile fading.] He's so young that- that he still has his parents.

It's part of the setting. Anyone can learn a type of superpower that lets them warp reality; they call it Bending. Those who get good enough can ascend, and the final stage is becoming a living city, pretty much.

He- wait, what? But I-

That was kind of my reaction when I found out who he was. He's been to Nautilus before, and apparently the Riddler looked after him. He was pretty crushed when I told him that the Riddler was a supervillain, but I think he'll stay away from him, at least.

Now, see, the warping reality part, that's more my thing. [Because magic] But you're telling me that people turn into an entire city? Like, buildings, cars, citizens, that whole thing?

Oh.

Yeah, uh.

Well.

[There is this pause as Terry struggles with the concept of Bruce as anything like that young. He manages all right, even if gosh this is weird, but once he's hit the 'okay maybe' stage that morphs to curiosity pretty fast.]

What's he like?

The more I hear about this place you're stuck, the less I like it.

It's not -- it's not that simple, you can't just take matters randomly into your own hands. You need training, and experience with the small stuff first, and more training. That's what you start with, not the doing stuff. [ Max you hypocrite. ] You can get yourself killed.

It's not so bad most of the time. Everyone who arrives is depowered, anyone can get powers, and the good guys outnumber the baddies.

I've been getting training. Trying to, from as many people as possible. Helping out with support. But- I've noticed that bad things happen around me.

No, the buildings and people are... additions. The person turns into the foundations of the city, and guides it.

Very cheeful. Energetic. Optimistic. He wants to be a hero like Zorro and the Grey Ghost, and to be a doctor like his- his father.

Ouch.

See, the bad things happening around you, that's where a lot of my problems are coming from.

I'm glad you're getting training though. That's important -- who are you getting it from?

Of course not! I've- also tried not to hint at it, while also not lying. Just- avoid the subject.

[And here Terry tries to lighten the mood a little bit, because Zorro and The Grey Ghost and Terry knows what's coming - knows far, far better than Dana does. He knows what Bruce put himself through (some), and by now can even appreciate some of it.]

He's still got a Grey Ghost collection.

Man, I remember that movie.

Even before Nautilus. In Gotham, too. Maybe it's more the school that's a bad-luck magnet, except that the bad luck's followed me to Nautilus, too.

Lelouch and V, mostly. Though it was disrupted by the Dark Aeon's attack. I'm also going to get training from Starscream soon- I hope.

I remember you talking about it. Back in elementary school. When your parents- they were still together. I was jealous, at the time.

That movie- it was a revival. So it probably doesn't exist in his time. Think there's any harm in letting him watch it?

And here I thought you were always the girl with the world in the palm of your hand.

And yeah. I was eight, I think. Maybe nine. Jeeeez that feels like it was a long time ago.

Naaaah. It'd be good for him. Second gen heroes are schway, you know?

I think it was more the school in Gotham, or Batman. We were just kind of incidental.

I don't know Lelouch or V, but I know a Starscream some - I guess he'd make a pretty decent teacher. [ a sigh. ] I guess I just wish you had Terry or me there.

Those three are some of the most senior, and most powerful, residents. They all have skeletons in their past, but... I think that's what I need, now. Instead of an infallible, uncompromising, unforgiving Batman.

I wish you or Terry were there, too. Or anyone from home, really. Even the new Batman would be an improvement.

I had all the money and things, but you had the family. Even after your parents separated, they were still both around for you. I can't even remember what it's like, to have two parents for a family outing.

Way schway. Especially the real ones.

Guess it goes to show that the grass is always greener, huh?

[She gets one of those smiles of his, half sweet and half cocky]

Batman's -- well, he's Batman. But I think learning from someone else could be a good call. I've got an ancient Celtic goddess of war teaching me, it works pretty well.
