No! I see clearly now! Why are you saying that?

He needs me. Others need me. I know what I must do.

[What of your friends? And family?]

They...will understand. [She smiles sadly.] Everyone should be given the chance to chase their dreams.

It is hard, to give up familial duty for the sake of love and dreams. One must be careful.

[He tilts his head, trying to pull his frown into a smile.] Your mun...perhaps they believe they are protecting you?

[princess_marina]

I don't need protection. I've made up my mind. If I can't have his heart...

And if I'm not meant to be with him...

Then I will help him in another way. I'll protect him as the sea foam.

[It's all a mermaid who can't have her true love can look forward to, really.]

He must be a good prince, and an even better man, to bring out such devotion. [He sits down next to her.]

Foam has no arms to hold and to lift a shield. No legs to run and no voice to cry out the danger with. Do not think me cruel, but how will you protect him like that?

[princess_marina]

He is. [In her mind and in her heart.

She turns away, smoothing her fingers through her long hair.]

I can carry his ship to a safe place; I can lift his men or himself out of the sea and onto land.

Then you wish to become the sea itself, dear lady? The waves and wind?

[princess_marina]

I do. That's...all that's left for me.

All mermaids who cannot find true love become sea foam.

You define sea foam differently than I would. [He sighs, unable to stop himself from reaching over to pat her head, like he's soothing a younger sibling.] Losing your true love is one of the hardest things anyone can go through.

But... shall I tell you a story, little mermaid?

[princess_marina]

[Marina blinks at the pat, turning to look at him in surprise. She hasn't experienced much kindness as of late.]

I'd like to hear it. [She pauses before adding.] And...my name is Marina.

[irohdisboat]

I'm Iroh. It's nice to meet you, Marina. [He'll leave out his titles for now. This isn't about those anyway.]

There was once a young man, a warrior of common birth, who fell in love with a beautiful princess. Some say at first sight. He could not get enough of her. He made it a point to always be somewhere he could see her, talk with her, anything was wonderful if she was involved. Through his kindness and his persistence he found his love returned.

Sadly though, it was not meant to be. The princess had already been betrothed long before she met the warrior. A man she did not love, and who saw her as an object. But still out of duty to her people, she would marry. It did not stop the warrior how ever, and he loved he even more for her honor.

[ He leans back, taking a breath, trying to collect the next part of the tale and figure out how to phrase it to her.] In a certain spring, hidden in the land they all lived in, dwell the spirit of the Moon. The princess's people guarded the secret of it's location. But information wants to be free, and a man with evil in his heart found the spring, and killed the moon spirit, bringing plight to the land.

It was then that the princess realized her greatest duty and honor. She took the place of the moon spirit, and left both the warrior she loved, and the mortal realm.

[sea_witch]

You should be happy! After all, it's not every little mermaid who gets her second chance, is it?

[princess_marina]

...n-no, but I don't want a second chance. I was fine with...

[sea_witch]

Well, isn't that a pity? Here you are, with a second chance, and all you can do is mope about wanting to be sea foam again.

But he's in love with another woman. She's...his true love. I can't interfere with that.

Sometimes, the only way to get what you want is to play dirty. You don't always get what you deserve, no matter how hard you may have fought for it, or how much you deserve it. There comes a time when you have to reach out and snatch up what you deserve with your own tentacles.

Or fins.

[princess_marina]

I don't believe that for a moment! [She really is another Sea Witch! Why are there two of them?] I want him to love me for the right reasons; not because I played dirty! It's not his fault he loves her and it's not her fault that she loves him.

Any woman would love him.

[sea_witch]

[Because one evil sea witch is never, ever enough!]
