I do appreciate an outing, of course, but you really must allow me to return with haste. I'm certain that my husband will be concerned if I'm kidnapped, and he is under a great deal of pressure these days, after all.

Besides, he needs me. And would it be too arrogant to say that France itself may very well need me in the coming days?

[Quiet and subtle, as per usual, Athos bows his head politely.]

France needs all the help it can get, I'm afraid. But there are other places, equally as troubled.

Athos. I certainly would not have expected to see one of the valiant Musketeers here. Though I must admit that I am grateful that I am not trapped here with only Lord Buckingham for company from home.

[ a pause, pursing her mouth thoughtfully, peering up at him. ]

--And are these places that you have been?

[Athos can't quite help the grimace that twitches onto his face ever so briefly. The subject of Lord Buckingham is a bit of a sore one.]

Lord Buckingham's company is...

[Irritating. Pompous. A spoiled brat and an idiot, for good measure.]

[Best to be gentle with his words for now. There is a lady present, after all.]

Other nations suffer from similar atrocities to ours, Your Majesty, but I would not belittle our problems or choose to compare them. I speak instead of the place in which I have been housed for the time being.

[Or, as the mun would call it, his "current residence and game."]

Indeed, he can be quite full of himself at times.

[ her brows arch. ] I should hope you give me a bit more credit than that, Athos. I am the Queen. It's my duty to be familiar with the troubles of other nations, as they may soon become our own. [ not to mention those that are their allies. ]

[he apologizes. Might as well make that as clear as possible. Athos is very fond of Anne, and he understands how difficult her position is in court.]

My place of residence, at present, is called Wonderland. A curious land with a chateau of no insignificant size in the middle of rather expansive grounds.

'Wonderland'. The name is misleading, I take it, if it is as troubled as you say. [ a brief pause, brows drawing together faintly. ] Have you been well? I do find myself concerned at times.

You need not concern yourself with my well-being, My Lady. I am better than most, but lacking in my usual...

[Ah. Well. Pothos, Aramis, and D'Artagnan aren't around. It pretty much blows for a guy who doesn't make friends easily.]

...Company. Lord Buckingham, [Grit teeth.] is present, but the circumstances could pose much more of a threat than an entitled Englishman. Much of the time, I find the environment here somewhat tame.

While I am glad of your health, I am sorry to hear that you are alone with only the Duke for companionship. I would not have wished it on you of all people.

[ a twitch of her mouth, almost a smile. ] Though you must be terribly bored in a place you consider tame.

Your Majesty sees right through me.

[He smiles faintly in return.]

I admit that I long for the action of the Maison du roi. A Musketeer is of little use without his King and Queen.

Were I to arrive in this 'Wonderland', you may tire just as quickly of being my escort.

Your Majesty is much mistaken.

[In fact, Athos knows he'd have a hell of a time trying to keep Buckingham from sullying the Queen with his presence. That sounds like enough of a job to him.]

I would be honored to serve you.

If that is so, then I would be most grateful to have your company. If I must be sent somewhere other than where I'm supposed to be, I would be fortunate indeed to have you there, and you are infinitely preferable to certain others of our mutual acquaintance.

[Aww. Awwww. That's like a compliment! It's nice to hear that his company is more pleasant than Lord Buckingham's. He appreciates it. He's even smiling. Familiar faces are a joy to see, truly.]

[Understatement of the seventeenth century.]

If Your Majesty should require my assistance at any time, please do not hesitate to call upon me.

[ well, she likes louis' musketeers, after all, and athos just hasn't been the same since that nastiness with lady clarick. ]
