[He makes a curt, definitely edging on mocking, bow. The resemblance to Scar in appearance and attitude is uncanny. It's hard to believe the two weren't blood related.]

Yes, yes - I've heard all about Great Kings and Queens and stars.

[Even if he had never star-gazed as a cub he had heard the legend in passing about the Great Kings and Queens of the past. He still wondered, however childish it might seem, if Scar was up there, watching over him.]

I am sorry you were murdered. However, I was not born until many years later. You judge me based on how you think I will act even if you don't say so. You judge me more harshly than you would another rogue lion because of who I was raised by. Are you going to be like Simba and punish me for a crime I didn't commit? Exile cubs and lionesses to barren lands because of their mere association with King Scar?

Is that what Simba decided? [He looks, if anything, a little saddened by that news.] A cub should never starve. If it were in my paws, I would keep a close eye on you. As a rogue and the son of a lioness who was openly loyal to Scar, it cannot be helped.

However, as time passed and you found your place, my worries would dissipate.

Every lion deserves a chance. [Here he pauses.] But you must be sympathetic to the pain Scar caused. Because of him, our home was nearly lost.

My home was lost. I was born in the Pridelands. I am a Pridelander by birth. I cannot help who I was born to nor who I was raised by. I have tried to rise above it, though.

[A little bit of Kovu's real feelings are seeping through now. Maybe the Pridelands had been in ruin but it had been his home. He was so young when they were exiled but he remembers his brother and sister crying out - the pain it caused them.]

Simba was scared. He let his fear rule him instead of seeing the innocence and potential before him.

[He closes his eyes, inhaling deeply.]

[That... touches a nerve for some reason in Kovu and he looks away. Maybe it's because he never knew his own father. Maybe he knows how it feels to wish someone had been able to stay. For all Zira and Scar's brainwashing, Kovu actually has a kind heart but it is barely surviving thanks to the emotional and physical abuse he has endured.]

To fight Scar and eventually kill him in order to take Scar's place in the Pridelands. To kill Scar and become king.
