You, uh, you can't really survive in any meaningful sense of the word if you lose your dæmon, but that's only happened to one person so far and he was doing one of the few things guaranteed to put your soul in danger.

He went into the Spectres' territory without proper transportation in an attempt to get back to his world, and they got him. It's really the only big potential danger to your soul, though, and it really is easy to avoid!

It's definitely more like a town. You need to get a job if you want to stick around the Observatory, but there are also a lot of other worlds available if you can't or don't want to stay in your own. Some of them are pretty neat, with angels or magic or aliens.

Something about 'protective loyalty, 'gentle to close friends but intimidating to strangers', 'obedience', and a natural fit given my line of work. Supposedly in that universe, people with dog daemons tend to be servants, and I qualify as a public servant, according to her.

Hell if I know, I don't even like dogs, one too many have tried to bite me for that.
