I'm not entirely certain you have thought this through. While you may think this is something you can handle, not many are made to survive when true freedom reigns. That you call it chaos proves my point exactly.

As for the storyline that allowed your mind to grasp tightly to my own consciousness, do try and accept that what you may perceive as this thing you call "headcanon" may not be a path I wish to share with you.

We are both human. But what I consider "hope", you call it a "delusion". What you call "rebirth" to me is just a bullshit way of saying you're going to wipe out a whole city.

But then, you probably prefer to call such thinking a delusion because if it wasn't then you would be wrong and everything you believe in would be meaningless.

Human is not enough to make people alike. A wolf and a dog are of the same genus but they are far from the same.

I call it delusion because you hold hope in a dying system. It is like holding tight to a butterfly to save it and crushing it in the process. Mankind talks of the planet ending but they need to be honest. It isn't the planet that won't go on but their civilizations.

My belief in what I stand behind can never be destroyed. I am unwavering in my service.

We are alike in that sense, then, because I'm unwavering in mine. I won't give up.

[ And he had more than his fair share of reasons to give up on this city, to not give a damn about it and condemn it to Hell. But he can't find it in himself to do that. He just can't. He never has.

So he won't. ]

You have faith in a false idol. In commissioners that protect killers. In killers that masquerade as heroes. How hollow your heart must be.

And how hollow yours must be to think the only way you can save anything is to destroy it.

Destruction allows for new growth. A caterpillar is destroyed so the butterfly can emerge. A rose bush will not grow unless it is pruned, made to fear destruction.

My heart and soul are full. I have no doubt of that.

Wrong. A caterpillar doesn't die; it evolves and changes. It adapts and grows. Change can happen without taking the life that's already there.

[ At the rest, he shakes his head at Bane, expression back to being incredulous. ]

And you say I'm delusional...

I do. You prefer the picture behind your closed lids than you do what lays before you.

As for change, it can happen. It never will in Gotham. Rome died. The Mayans died. It is time for Gotham to lay down and accept its fate.

Contrary to what you believe, I do see what lays before me. I have for years and Gotham is not Rome. These are not the same circumstances nor are these the same people.

You cannot come here and expect the people that want to live, the people that do good every day without needing to be put into a situation that forces them to pick a side, you cannot expect them to just give all of that up. They have hopes and dreams and people they care about. Who the fuck are you to come here and tell them otherwise?

You say your eyes are open? They may be open but you're blinded by your own beliefs and the only thing you're full of is an out-dated doctrine that no longer applies because people and times can change and in turn change the city they live in.

It is the great culture and it is dying. As for me, I have said this before. I am Gotham's Reckoning. My place is assured and the need great.

You ignore when I answer this. They have not changed. Time for man is not infinite and he can not be allowed to ruin it all until nothing is left.

So you alone deem yourself the judge of such a thing?

You make assumptions fitting your station, as well as the blinders of Gotham.

And you make statements fitting a murderer that views himself as a liberator.

I'm certain that is how you interpret them. Just as you certainly see the commissioner as a good man.

[ And there is that anger stirring again. He restrains it, though. Has to. ]

He is a good man.

Dent was a mistake then? Intentionally criminalizing the wrong man and putting a monster on a pedestal is the acts of a good man?

[ He takes a step closer to Bane, looking him straight in the eye. ]

What do you know of good men?

Harvey Dent was a good man who was driven into madness and fell. The Commissioner was trying to honor what good he had done. He didn't want the sacrifices that had been made to have been in vain. It was misguided in the end but the intention behind it was good which is more than what can be said about the Commissioners before him.

[ He then gives Bane a once over. ]

But of course none of that matters to you. You're so set in your "rebirthing" process that you can't consider anything else.

[ Bane doesn't move as the officer moved closer. Just staring at him, only his eyes showing any emotion though it is muted, based on what he kept close to his heart. ]

I know that you are making a defense based on your heart and not logic. It is something I recognize. Your commissioner did not think he was a good man though, did he? Not with the resignation in that letter.

My place in the universe is not to be swayed by a toy of the enemy.

[ Blake doesn't move away, his voice remaining as steady as it had been, tone level despite the emotion that is building up inside. ]

He's not a "toy". He's a human being with a heart and soul and felt guilt over defending the man that drove his family away and allowed blame to be placed on the only person that helped him in a time when Gotham was corrupt in nearly every way.

[ He pauses. ]

If you recognize such a defense, then how can you turn a blind eye to all those lives that have tried to change the course of things here? Because they weren't trying hard enough for you?

[ Behind the mask, Bane chuckled. The sound seemed to echo. ]

He was not the toy I was refering to. It was you. They use you and you let them. That they do it is not on them, that you let them is on you.

When Gotham was corrupt. You say that as if it will ever change.

When less than one percent of the people recognize they are a dying culture run by the scum, then there is no hope for them. They should embrace the glory of the future of Gotham.

[ His eyes narrow at Bane, biting down on the inside of his mouth once again to try and reign in his temper. He can't give this man that kind of satisfaction. ]

You say you're just a "cog in the wheel" of your little operation but you talk as if you're an absolute authority, as if you know for a fact that there can be no other way or alternative and I can't believe one word of it.

I also refuse to believe that you believe everything you're spouting.

[ Shaking his head and taking a half-step closer, ]

There had to have been a time in your life when you didn't go by this shit, that you actually believed in humanity and that they were capable of great things even when everything else was horrible.

Even the smallest cog might know their place as it makes the clock turn. I do know. I hold belief and faith in what will be reality. That is how I can speak with such absolute authority. I know my place and I have faith in the outcome no matter how slow the progress may be.

[ That step closer made an eyebrow lift a moment, curious what the officer's goals might be. ]

I will tell you this about me, if only to dash your hopes in rattling my beliefs. There was never such a time. I was raised knowing where humanity ended and the true animal nature of man took over.

[ John stares at Bane for a moment before shaking his head and taking a few steps back, rubbing a hand down his face. He was trying to appeal to any remnant of a "better nature" in the other man, to see if there was any still there.

He just can't understand how there doesn't seem to be... anything there. Just this absurd way of thinking that he can't bring himself to even consider embracing.

He turns back towards Bane a points a finger at him, ]

You're the one who lives an empty existence. How can you possibly appreciate what life really is or what possibilities there are if you're so busy destroying it and telling other people they don't know anything just because they aren't as "enlightened" as you?

[ And "enlightened" was putting it nicely - not that Bane deserved it. ]

[ There came a sound that not many heard from Bane. A laugh. ]

You seem disappointed. You think you understand my existence, my tribulations. You judge on nothing but your own shuttered gaze. You have seen one act, one place, not the whole of my existence and yet you shake your head as if - what?

What did you expect? The loss of my plan to leave me lowered to begging for forgiveness? Asking for help to become a better man?

I am a better man than any in this city might ever hope to be because I have faced the destruction, the lack of hope and the horrid despair and I am stronger for it. You all grow weak in this town and accept that weakness as living.

[ His voice finally does rise in volume, coming back to stand in front of the other man, ]

And what are you doing? You're doing the same goddamn thing! You don't understand the hardships that other people have been through! You can't possibly know their losses or struggles! You're just focusing on yourself and what you think is needed! You're not the only one who's had a hard life! Can you grasp that with your enlightened mind?

I don't expect anything from you -- you're suppose to be dead.

[ He gives Bane another once over, ]

Might as well be if you're just gonna keep spouting the same bullshit that you think was suppose to "change the world".
