It's so nice to see you again, mun! I know you think you might fall out of interest all over again, but, at least while I'm here, we can still have a good time, right?

I'm not sure why you find my username so funny, though... Ah, if you say it's fine, then I won't worry about it!

Now, I know you haven't got much of an idea what to do with me now that I'm here, but if you'd like to set me in a game, then I'm sure you'll pick a good one that will work. Don't give up! Oh--and maybe Shadow will be there, too. That would be wonderful.

You know Shadow? And here I thought he didn't associate with any humans, myself excepted of course.

Oh? That's strange... Sometimes he keeps to himself, but he definitely associates with me and Grandfather. And everyone else that works with him.

[Cogs are turning in Eggman's brain here.] ... Grandfather?

[And Maria is just oh so proud to explain.] Professor Gerald Robotnik!

[So it is her.]

Professor Gerald! Ho ho ho! I knew it! So you are Maria!

Oh...why, yes, I am. I'm surprised you know me... Oh, I'm so sorry, I don't know who you are!

[Said proudly:] Doctor Ivo Robotnik. Surely you can see the family resemblance! [It's all in the moustache.] I'm the spitting image of our grandfather, if I do say so myself.

Well, I wasn't going to say anything; I thought it might be a little awkward. But you do look a bit like him. [She gives a small laugh.] I'm afraid I don't know any Ivo's in my family, but that's hardly surprising. So...if he's also your grandfather, then that must make us--cousins? You seem a little old for that... Um, not that I'm saying you're old, of course! I only mean for that kind of relationship, but anything is possible. [Poor, naive, not yet dead Maria.]

[Eggman scratches his head and laughs a little.]You're right, but time is strange in this place. We're simply from different places in the time line. I'm from a good fifty years in the future from you, I'd have to say. I was actually born after you. Strange, isn't it?

I suppose that's true. I've been here and there with my mun before, but it's been a while. I'm still the same old me, though! Funny how that works.

[The dark glasses covering his eyes make it less obvious, but Maria might notice a sad look about Eggman's face for a moment before he regains his pokerface.] Perhaps your mun just likes you the way you are!

Maria...

No, this... mustn't be true... Get a hold of yourself...

[That would be just ridiculous. She- She couldn't be alive! It isn't possible, is it?]

...What--what's the matter, Shadow?

This... This cannot be...

[The stunned black hedgehog stretches a hand out, yet he doesn't touch anything, purely in a state of shock that he cannot pull himself out of.]

Is it... really you, Maria?

Of course it's really me. [She, of course, is much less shy about touching, but given Shadow's reaction, she's cautious when she approaches and takes his hand.] Who else could it possibly be?

You- How--...?!

[She's real. She's very real. That hand grasping his... Yes, that is all too real. There is no denying it!]

How are you... [His voice lowers to a grim whisper, namely due to the subject matter.] ... alive?

...Come here. [Maria gets down on her knees and wraps Shadow up in a hug. Because it looks like he could use it. Poor traumahog...]

Maria...

[Shadow doesn't hesitate now, snaking his arms around her and hugging her as tightly as he possibly could. Maria... She has always been like a sister to him, his only family, and when she died, he is positive that a piece of him died right along with her.

She is here now, however. She is here, and she is okay.

That is all he can think of as one single tear slides down his fuzzy cheek.]

I... refuse to let anything happen to you ever again.

It's okay, Shadow. There's no reason to be sad anymore. I don't want to see you...so sad...ever again, okay?

[Normally, Shadow the Hedgehog did not like being commanded, but Maria... Maria is exceptional in so many ways. He is not about to make her sad through his own misery, especially when there is no reason for it anymore. She's here, she's alright, and they can be happy once more...

He nuzzles into her, the smallest of purrs coming from him.]

I... will not be, as long as you do not leave me again...

I didn't mean to. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry! You know I would never, if I could help it. [She reaches a hand up to scratch behind one of his ears.] I'll do anything to make sure you're not sad.

[She's apologizing? But- But why? She didn't need to! She didn't even do anything! It was all... them...]

Maria...

[He flicks his ear a little in response to the touch, warmth reaching his cheeks with pure contentedness. He looks up to her, his frown a contrast to the ecstatic feelings within.]

You needn't apologize. You did nothing wrong. You...

[He sighs.]

You couldn't help it. They were ruthless, and...

[She frowns. She's had The Talk a few times before in other games, and it's never gone over well for either side.] Let's not think about that. It's okay now. That was... [Impossible to imagine.] A long, long time ago.

[[IDK IDK I WILL THINK ON THINGS I'm just. brushing off the dead loli muse, we'll see what happenssss]]

[Shadow dips his head. That much is true, but being in stasis for so long... It still feels so fresh in his mind...]

It will be okay. [He lifts his head, a newfound determination in his stare.] I will not allow them to harm you ever again.

[[ ahahahahah gotcha!! ]]

[She still doesn't like the tone of his voice, even if she appreciates the sentiment. Anyone who wanted to harm her (and why would they?) was sure to be met with...violence, and she certainly didn't want to see that side of him. Maria kisses the tip of his nose.]

I know. I won't let anything happen to you, either. We'll protect each other, and then...oh, you can introduce me to people, and the world, and we can...live like we always said we would, back on the Ark.

[So full of positivity, and oh, how very contagious it is. Shadow never is the type to just take on the happiness of others, but Maria... When Maria is happy, he is happy.

Thus, for the first time in a long time, he genuinely smiles.]

You will enjoy Earth. It is what we dreamed of and more.

[He glances around, and soon enough, his smile lessens.] You could say there are a few people you should know about. You will meet them in due time.

[Sonic, for instance.]

[She's gotten along very well with every Sonic she's ever met. Much to Shadow's chagrin.] I hope so. I want to meet any friends you have! Any friend of yours has to be a friend of mine. There must be so many people who like you; you're a sweetheart~

[Well, that gets a little blossoming of red on his cheeks. Why exactly that happens is a complete mystery, perhaps even to him, as well. Maybe it was that last bit...]

Tch. Hardly. [He turns his head away.] Although, there is one little pest that seems to follow me wherever I go...

[Oh, Shadow, that's so cute~ She'll just pinch those adorable furry cheeks of yours.] Don't be like that, Shadow; I'm sure that's not true! Is this pest actually a pest? Have you told them to leave you alone?

He is so cheerful that it is inane and irritating, to put it lightly.

[He huffs, but he just doesn't stop her from pinching at his cheeks. He can't. He missed that so much, no matter how much it stung and felt strange.] I have... tried to push him away, as well as some others for... multiple reasons.

[Namely because he knows he'll lose them soon anyway.]

What's so irritating about being cheerful? Nothing wrong with a little cheer. [And Shadow could use that in his life.

Maria sighs and sits.] I realize you were never the most outgoing person. But I don't think you should be pushing people away.

[... Might as well explain it. If anyone will understand, she will.

He sits beside her, placing a hand on hers, as if letting her go for even a moment will wind up in him losing her again. His eyes drop, ears wilting and tail hanging limply.]

... I respect him, Maria. I hold respect for a few others, as well, and yet...

You must understand. I will outlive them all. One day, they will all die, and I... I will be alone again. I cannot do that again, not after what happened to you.

[He sighs shakily. Not the easiest thing to get off of his chest, but he trusts her. She's sweet, yet honest and forward. She'll never toy with him or use him. She's just... an angel.]

[She was always aware of this point. Grandfather had been researching immortality, after all, and created the Ultimate Life. He wasn't meant to die--well, not of natural causes, anyway. But she's never thought of it like that before. She leans against him.]

I'm...I'm sorry. You can always make new friends as you go, but... [But that's far easier to say than to actually do.]

Are you that lonely...because of me?

[He doesn't retaliate, but rather, he leans into her touch, savoring her warmth and kindness while he still has it. She's here, but will it last? He isn't sure. Therefore, he is going to spend every last waking moment with her as if it is their last, just in case that becomes a reality.]

... I would never lie to you, Maria.

[His lids lower.] He... reminds me of you. I...

[Then, his eyes shut, a shuddering sigh coming from him.] I cannot... lose someone like you, too, and his death may be sooner than expected. Reckless idiot...

In that case, I definitely want to meet him. [It's said in a light enough tone, though she is fully aware of how distressing the situation is.]

I just don't... I don't want to see you be alone. You deserve better than that. But maybe there's no right answer to this.

... Perhaps not, but I will see what I can do.

[He shakes his head, curling up a little beside her. He is quiet for a brief moment, but then he speaks again, saying one simple name.]

Sonic.

If you meet a hedgehog named Sonic, you will see what I mean.

I'll keep that in mind. [But Sonic isn't important right now. Shadow most definitely is. She's more than happy to let him curl up comfortably. At least that feels a little more normal.]

It'll all be okay, you'll see. We'll make it okay. And you won't have to be alone.

I think...

[He nods, sleepily nuzzling up to her and curling his tail around his body (albeit obviously not a decent portion of it). He finally gives a smile, one with a very faint glimmer of optimism, should she look carefully.]

... I think I have hope for that now, Maria...

[Because she's like his guardian angel, and he knows she wouldn't allow him to be alone again.]
