Alfred chuckles good naturedly all the same.] Well, you're not wrong. When one has an inordinate ammount of money at one's disposal, one finds rather creative uses for it.
It's very kind of you to say so, Master Wayne. You'll excuse me if I don't say more than that, because as much as my player wishes to have me talk to you all, I'd rather keep my mouth shut so as not to accidentally spoil any of it for you.
[Significant pause. Hinthint it rhymes with hatman]
A billionaire playboy has duties to uphold. If the word gets out he's not wearing the latest fashion all those lovely supermodels and russian ballerinas seem to dissapear into this air.
Well that's the trick, isn't it? Getting only the things out of life that you want, without all those other responsibilities which we tend to accumulate along the way.
[Responsibilities. Yes, he knows all about those. Self-assigned duties. To Gotham. To himself.
But maybe it occurs to him in this moment that he's not the only one to have acquired such responsibilities. Suddenly, this conversation is taking on a whole different weight. He falls silent for a time before--]
[It's not often Alfred's without a quick or witty response, but Bruce's question catches him off guard.
When he finally replies he tries to keep his tone light, but there's a heaviness to his words.] Your father took a risk when he took me on to care for his family. He was a great, influential man, but not always a popular one- and we both knew that my position within your family could have been a weakness to him if I had chosen to betray him. But he took me on all the same and opened his family to me and- in time- I came to view the Wayne family as my own.
[He pauses, leaving unspoken that he has never had a wife or child of his own. He gave up that opportunity to better serve Bruce's father and then Bruce himself.] I want the same thing I've always wanted, Master Wayne. To see you live a happy and long life.
I'm a girl who likes to make her own good time, Alfred.
[ and then a devious little smile quirks the corner of her lip. ] Although, the look on Wayne's face every time he thought he was getting the better of me had to be near the top of the list.
[ the smile twitches off her face at the memory of watching bane prove that point with ruthless efficiency. ] He's not the first or only man to fancy himself beyond the rest of us mere mortals.
[ and, with a certain grudging air at admitting this part out loud: ] But he does seem have to a remarkable capacity for... resilience.
The Wayne family has a reputation for stubborn men. If they think there's a wrong out there that they can right, I'd think twice about getting in their way.
