All Men shows signs of it even though they may act nobler than most.

[Boromir sees no reason to pretend he doesn't know what Haldir means. The subject troubles him so deeply he would find it difficult to do so, anyway.] I know what lies in the city, but I am still bound to protect Frodo. If this means protecting him from myself then so it shall be. I will not let that thing take hold of me again.

[ And so the truth is revealed from its thin veil made out of obscure words. The marchwarden would have it no other way but initially did hope to spare the man's pride. ]

Is that so, Son of Gondor? If so, I certainly hope you'll honor your creed and not your greed.

The fate of Middle-earth rests upon the shoulders of the Fellowship. Failure cannot be an option regardless of what Fate has designed for you.

[He does have his own plans though. He will protect Frodo from afar as best he can and avoid the ring at all costs. He can't befall that madness again. Still, he asks:] What would you have me do?

I fear they will need all the strength you may lend them, my brother.

Then I shall do all I can, little brother. The city of Abax may have me yet, and the evil lurking through its corridors shall know what it means to make enemies of Gondor!

Then surely fear will strike at the hearts of those who are foolish and willing to wrong you.

As it should be! [He speaks as though in jest but his expression doesn't quite match his tone. He seems grim instead, but it's fleeting.] At least they should think twice before drawing any more of Gondor's people into their trap.

[ here, faramir laughs - perhaps a bit out of place, for a situation so dire. yet he feels as though he cannot help it. ] I pity your enemies, then.

[To that, Boromir cracks a grin -- his amusement is sincere this time. He won't have that somber air last during a reunion with his brother.] Better still, once the enemy is no more I shall show this city how Gondor celebrates! There will be drinking and singing like they have never known. It shall be a victory to be remembered by all.

I am told our friends are in dire need of entertainment. And hope that they will survive the terrors brought on by the city.

[ a beat, then he reaches forward to clap his brother on the shoulder - perhaps to test for himself that he is real. ] You will be most welcome, there.

They will survive it. [Firmly.] They have not suffered these dark days in our lands only to meet their ends in one unknown.

[Then he hesitates.] I am glad, although... [More hesitation.] I fear what may come to pass. I know that Frodo's burden has followed him to the city.

And without the mountain wherein this thing should be cast...

[ pause. ] Take courage, Boromir. You must be strong in the face of this enemy.

I did not have the strength before, little brother, and I do not know if I will now.

The knowledge that you had wronged Frodo before may serve to strengthen your heart and your will against this evil. I have faith that you will not fall again.

Dark are the days in the city, and yet hope remains, for there is no shortage of those folk who are good and true. The darkness will not always prevail, friend.

I cannot see an end to this darkness. What hope is there in a land where an army of ten thousand men would mean nothing to the enemy? Still, I swear to follow you to whatever end we may find in this strange city, should I come.

This darkness will end, my brother. The world of Men has not fallen, nor shall it, not while there are those who have the will to fight. The same is true for the city. We are not so defenseless there, however the enemy strives to do us harm.

This enemy remains a mystery to you, does it not? What defense do you have against an enemy you cannot see? One you do not even know?

The enemy shows its hand by putting certain events into motion. It cannot be trusted, and it seems to take pleasure from setting up obstacles in our path. The latest being an unusual creature with tentacles and other creatures with voices that bewitch and ensnare.

These creatures can be fought and defeated, even if their master cannot yet be seen.

Perhaps it is not much unlike that which we have already endured. [He sounds thoughtful, but he still can't see how there could be much hope.] But still I worry. Are there many who can fight?

I have found that it is not entirely unlike the peril that we have striven against. [Save for the fact that, for the most part, Sauron moved where his hand could be seen. The enemy in Abax is still mostly unknown to Aragorn.] Soldiers and fighters may be found, and those who are still young, yet they are not lacking in courage.

One can find hope without a sword, as long as they have people with them who are steadfast and true.

I'm afraid such sentiment holds little value beyond your Shire, Frodo. In these dark times men must find their courage and strength of heart, yes, but these alone do not win battles.

If everyone solved all their problems with swords and bows, it would be a wonder there was anything left to fight over in the end.

Yet if none did, there would still be those waiting to steal away power and lives as though they were theirs for the taking. Most times it is wisest to choose a strong-hearted man who is armed over one who is not.

You're right, I only wish it didn't have to be so. But there must be other ways.

As do we all. But that is also why we Men must fight, so good and honest folk like the Halflings need never to turn to swords or arrows.

[ In the far distance, there's a man dressed in all black simply staring at the Gondor Steward. ]

Giving this man an appraising gaze as he drew ever so nearer, Benjen found himself arching his brow in mild shock. ]

Again forgive me for my assumption, Ser Boromir. Despite your striking resemblance to the Lord Paramount of Winterfell, I should've known that my brother would never stray so far from home.

You will find your purpose, son of Gondor. [ His voice is quiet, but firm. ] Of that I know true well.

My purpose? I have served my purpose. I am not sure I should find another so easily. [The idea that regardless of where he goes he'll be returning from the dead isn't sitting too well.]
