It's interesting. There's a very diverse group of people on board, and hearing about their cultures has been fascinating. Some of the unusual events are a bit difficult to cope with initially, but I'd like to think they do serve some sort of purpose at the end of the day.

How are the...Inmates? [And she makes a face.] Is that really the best thing to call them?

Powers can be hard to figure out, but...

...At least, that's what my mom told me once. It sounded better when she said it.

[Well, that's kind of cool to hear. Charles hasn't heard a lot of positive stuff about himself as a teacher/mentor/person in general, so he's definitely kind of excited to hear that.]

It's the term everyone uses, and I feel it's probably better than some of the alternatives. [Because if the wardens are more like therapists than prison guards, that would make the inmates patients and hoboy that would not fly well.] They vary, and the Admiral's usually quite good about assigning wardens to inmates he believes they can handle.

The Admiral runs the ship, right? [She can't help but frown; that's a lot of power for one man.] Does anyone know anything about him?

He does, and we don't know much, I'm afraid. He can be terribly uncooperative, and is honestly an extremely difficult man to work for, but I'd like to think the work we're doing here is worth it. Even beyond our deals, we're helping people make better choices.

[She blinks, and then she's grinning again.] You're like Sue Storm!

Um - she's a super hero, where I'm from. One of the best.

I don't know exactly what you're gonna be doing there, but in my experience this kind of thing is almost as much about your own growth as theirs. You grow up a lot when you have to; sometimes it isn't even terrible.

[She's quiet, for a moment, and then] A lot of them - they don't want to be there, do they? You can't force someone to change. And it's not...it's not really your right, anyway.

Most of them were brought to the Barge after they were killed. And no, you can't. The best we can do is try to be supportive and guide them to finding the right answers.

I guess that's true. You learn a lot from teaching other people.

It seems like...guidance, mostly. Showing people how to make better choices.

[There's that wry smile again.] Assuming we know what the right answers are.

I mean, there's basic stuff, like "don't go around killing people". But it gets more complicated than that, doesn't it?

They're hoping to send me to the Barge - this giant space ship run by some mysterious Admiral. It's supposed to give people second chances. Criminals, super villains, or just...people who got lost. And Wardens are there to help. Kind of...guide them down the path to redemption.

I don't know how good I'll be at it, but I'm willing to give it a shot.
