That's the nature of muns, to do the opposite of what we want to do.

Mun is impressed by the cast at the bar (particular that of some show named 'Castle'? ...oh yes, the writer), though I think she's set on that... one in the suburbs. You know, with the... woman... in your mun's headspace?

[He appears outwardly calm about it, but a good friend (or experienced profiler) will be able to tell that he's freaking out on the inside.]

My mun mentioned she'd played in that bar once before, a long time ago. I guess she's nostalgic.

[ Since Rossi is both, it's not hard to pick up on the fact that Reid is apprehensive. ]

The medical examiner? She's...interesting. [ He smirks a little. ] She reminds me of you, actually.

Well. At least we.. have related careers. That's something in common. Most relationships need to start with something in common.

[But if she's as awkward as he is, then they're probably not going to get very far very fast.]

[ She's awkward in general, though when it comes to relationships, she actually really enjoys them, and has been in several. Even if she, well, manages to alienate a lot of dates because she doesn't realize that discussing in detail the way the human body processes waste isn't exactly appropriate dinner conversation. ]

Do I- What? I'm not worried. What should I be worried about?

[He's petrified. But it's a good thing Spencer doesn't mind talking about bodily functions. He'll counter with the most interestingly gruesome crime scene details he can think of and see nothing wrong with it.]

Right. What could you possibly have to be worried about? [ Notice from his tone of his voice that he's being completely sarcastic. ]

[ And the sarcasm isn't exactly helpful, but you know...he has to. ]

A good first step would be getting to know her. She's not gonna be any more thrilled at first than you are.

Actually, they're cleaner than dogs and cats. Although I do like cats. They generally take care of themselves. Plus cats have been revered pets since 2000 BCE when the Egyptians considered them to be a symbol of grace and poise.

Too high maintenance. I come home from a long day, my dog is instantly happy to see me. I come home to a cat, I may or may not even be acknowledged. They're temperamental.

So you're looking for an obvious kind of comfort and acceptance from your pets? Cats can be that too, although they do tend to be more aloof and independent.

If you wanna put it that way. [ Sure, not all dogs instantly like people, but cats are far more moody than dogs, on the whole. It's almost like courting a woman, trying to coax a cat, and he'd rather not add to the difficulties. ]

[Though each time, he thought of Prentiss's cat Sergio, which brought his thoughts back to her and how she was gone.]

I'd make a pitch, but "come to Baedal, we have fog monsters" doesn't have much of a ring to it.

I do like to stay busy, even if in my line of work that doesn't bode well for everyone else.

That's always a conundrum, isn't it?

There are a lot of those, here. Conflicts. Ambiguities. More than usual, I mean.

None of that will ever go away. [ He can be a little cynical at times, sure, but mostly, he's just a realist. And there's always conflict and tragedy as a counterpoint to happiness; sometimes more, sometimes less, but the two extremes will always exist. ]

Which means I'll never stop doing my part to make things a little better.

How long have you been in this place?

[Her smile is slight, as she nods, but warm with sincerity.] Good to know.

It's been about six months, now. [She shakes her head.] It's started to feel like a home, instead of a cage.

My mun knows more about this place than I do, and she's not forthcoming.

What else can you tell me?

No one knows the mechanics behind abduction, so far. You just appear in the Valhalla with the clothes on your back, an item from home, and a comm device.

The main thing, really, is the Militia. Baedal calls itself a democracy, a republic - but it's a police state. And a fairly brutal one.

...I never seem to have normal vacations anymore.

I don't do vacations. I guess I'm making up for it now. [:|]

...It's not all bad. The blend of different lands and eras is fascinating, you get to meet people you never would have otherwise, and...

[Her voice softens.] And maybe people you never thought you'd see again.

I never seem to have enough time for more than a few days away, but I'd love to go back to Italy if the circumstances ever allowed it.

[ It's not difficult to catch that inflection in her voice. ]

You have people there that you've lost?

That does sound nice. I got to go there once, years ago. ...On business, but still.

[She gives a slight nod.] Yes. Or - that I thought I'd lost. Of course, with all these different universes it's possible I still did - [Okay, firm shake of her head.] Yeah, not going there.

Oh - you might meet people you know, but whose histories don't quite match up with yours.

Did you at least have time to enjoy it?

[ Ah. Nice. Just one more thing to look forward to. ]

[Her smirk is, somehow, sympathetic.]

[ He catches the trace of that sympathy, and does appreciate it. ]

And here I was worried.

I was a congresswoman, at the time.

[Her smirk fades into a more serious expression as she considers him.]

I think you'd do all right. As much as anyone does.

I used to play that game well, though I don't give a damn about politics anymore. So what do you do now?

[ Yeah, he's not really all that tactful sometimes. ]

At least my mun wants to do something with me.

[That gets a huff of laughter. She understands why he wouldn't.]

I - work behind the scenes. You could call me a dispatcher, I suppose.

Do you prefer that over being a congresswoman? [ He's curious about what made her leave that position, but that's more of a personal question than he feels comfortable asking right now. This isn't a criminal interrogation, after all. ]

[A wry smile plays at her lips as she answers the unspoken question.] I was a bit too liberal for re-election.

[ He smirks at the confession; he likes this woman already. ]

Sometimes I just don't play well at all. [ He jokes. He has no trouble admitting to things like that. ] If you were too liberal for re-election, you're probably just the kind of person I'd vote for.

[Barbara grins at him. She's getting pretty fond herself.] I'll keep that in mind if I ever run in Baedal.

I think I can manage a good campaign slogan for you, but that's the extent of any contribution I could make.
