testing out yet another au

My, my, my.

What a quaint headspace you have, miss writer. A few too many ... familiar faces, I must admit. I cannot imagine getting along with a single one of them. They seem rather distressed.

You do see the mistake you are making here, yes? Stepping forward into something with a simple notion, and naught the faintest of ideas where to take it. I've sit here for quite some time now, waiting for a little attention, and here I am now with only a name and a tentative story behind me.

The others did say you were the type to rush into things. I suppose it's better of me not to be surprised about it, hm?

But I appreciate the effort. I even get to have a little fun, which is more than what I can say for the rest of them. Perhaps you like me best.

[ He makes a motion with his hand as he finishes off the last bit of his drink, trying to communicate that it wasn't necessary. But he knows he's not getting the message across. So he brings the empty glass down onto the table with such force that it's a wonder nothing cracks. ]

Nonsense!

[ He plants a firm hand on Loki's shoulder, looking him square in the eye. ]

You may not be my brother, but I will protect you as though you were. It is my honor to do so!

[ Goodness-- that made him jump. Such passion, such ferocity! What a shame it would be in the end, but some people were just too trusting. ]

Surely, you will let me at least find some way to thank you.

[ He beamed, proudly. ]

Your company is more than enough!

[ He removed his hand, so he could catch the attention of a passing waiter, requesting another drink. ]

[ He still has half a glass left, but he decides why not? And orders himself a mojito. He has a fondness for refreshing mint. ]

But I insist. You will enjoy it, I assure you.

[ He seems mildly perplexed at the instance, but he at last gives in. A little. ]

What is it you had in mind?

[ There is a glint in his eyes, which could be seen as particularly wicked if Thor care to think it. ]

Telling you would spoil the surprise.

[ Oh, he sees it. But he takes to mean something more in the context of the Loki he knows. Mischief, yes. But not outright wickedness--he still didn't know of his brother's awful lies, after all.

He was about to say something, when the waiter returned with their drinks. By the time he had accepted his, he had forgotten what he was going to say. So he opted to go another direction. ]

If I am to protect you from these threats, I must at least know more of them. Their appearance, or what they are capable of. Are they mere humans, or are they something more?

[ Ah, mojito. Loki sets his wine glass aside, and takes a sip of minty fresh goodness. Mischief ... yes, he can pretend that's all it is, for now. ]

They're nothing more than mere humans with the right tools. They carry guns with silver bullets, crossbows with sharp wooden stakes, holy crosses and - well, you remember the garlic.

And they only walk the streets at night, when their prey is most active.

Their prey? Are they after more than just terrorizing you?

[ These did not sound to be like very nice people. As he took a drink from his new glass, he began wondering if there were a way to get to this man's world. Even with all its troubles, Midgard at least had its own heroes. Its own people who could stand up to such evils. ]

I did say they were hunters, did I not?

[ He wondered the same, if he could bring this mighty man of Asgard with him, to fend off the hunters and keep him all to himself. But, ah, it is only a fantasy. And for now, he can just enjoy having a drink with his new friend, and pretend. ]

They are certainly doing more than terrorizing me.

But you never said what it is they hunt, just that they cause you trouble.

[ He looked down at the beer in his hand and just set it down on the table. He was getting worried. Both from the way this man seemed to be talking in circles, and that he might be in grave danger. ]

Did I not mention the wolves and the undead?

[ He avoids the second part for now, eyeing the man beside him as he plays with the straw in his drink. Surely he would catch on quickly enough. ]

[ He was having difficulty piecing the story together. The manner in which Loki described the wolves and undead made them seem to be the enemy. But so were these hunters. Was it possible they were two enemy factions, and this man was caught between them? Certainly he couldn't be a member of either side, given how he spoke of them. What was he missing, then?

He thought perhaps he needed a moment, so he started to drink to fill the silence. But by the time half of his drink was gone, he still hadn't figured it out. So he put the glass down and looked over at Loki. ]

If these hunters are the champions of your world, those who fight the monsters...I still do not understand why they would treat you as a threat, as well. Are you not in need of protection from the evils of your world?

[ He can see the gears turning. Slowly, but surely. The man's obviously a bit slower, but not completely daft. That was promising.

Trying to keep that level of sympathy up, Loki glances away for a moment, putting on a convincing show of looking nervous and uncomfortable. As if he were surrounded by hunters. ]

I might have ... caused a bit of trouble for them in the past. But I have done nothing more since then, and I told them I was sorry. [ ... sort of. ]

[ That seemed to pacify his curiosity and concerns on the matter. And only solidified that these hunters needed to be dealt with. If Loki had tried to make amends for what ever wrongs he had caused, they should not threaten him further. It was dishonorable. ]

Are all men of your world so disagreeable as these?

[ Dodged a bullet, so to speak. As much fun as it was keeping the man guessing, he wasn't sure what Thor's reaction would be when he found out what sort of creature he really was. Hopefully, by that point in time, it will not matter. ]

All the ones I have come into contact have been, at least. [ He says it sadly, a hint of loneliness in his tone, though how much of it is genuine is yet to be made clear. ]

[ The words and tone struck Thor far deeper than they should have, when coming from someone that was still relatively a stranger. But the idea that this man could have lived out his life, never encountering a single kind person... for all the evils on Midgard, they at least had just as man kind hearts.

No, surely he misunderstood the meaning. That couldn't be possible. ]

In all your life?

[ The man's tone seemed to drop, seemingly distressed by Loki's answer. Interesting. Loki continued to play along, sighing softly as he glanced around at the other bar patrons, with a slight longing in his eyes. As if he really did miss being a social butterfly.

Which ... he actually might, if he thought about it. But that would be saved for another time. Right now, he was trying to stay in this man's good graces. ]

In all my life.

Up until now, of course.

[ This confirmation seemed to sadden him even further, as though he were trying to imagine the depth of living such a life. Adding several layers to the idea of having only ever known cruel and disagreeable men.

However, that second statement seemed to brighten him up, bringing a slight, hopeful smile to his face. ]

Then we must find you somewhere that you may know a better life. There are a thousand worlds open to us here. We need only find one which will welcome you, and show you the kindness you deserve.

[ It was strange, someone being so courteous to him. That much had been true, he had no one in the way of friends or acquaintances, merely victims and hunters and strangers. Those who didn't know better, and those who knew too well. This man, Thor, foolishly naive as he was ... he truly was the first kind man to him in centuries.

Should he ruin it for the sake of having a decent meal? ]

You are too kind. [ He smiles, and after another sip from his drink, he leans a little closer in his chair, his hand returning to the other man's forearm. ] I believe ... I would like that, very much.

[ He glanced down at the hand on his arm, but paid it no mind otherwise. ]

Then let us finish our drinks and we shall be on our way!

[ To show the dedication behind his words, he proceeded to down the remaining half of his beer. ]

[ He means the gesture to be nothing more than friendly, not yet. He's gained his trust, it's a good first step.

And as he watched the man polish off his drink in one gulp, he decides to do the same. A fraction slower of course, he's not a large man like his companion, but after a bit of effort his glass is empty as well.

Whoo, minty chilly freshness. ]

[ He deposits the glass on the table, ensuring to not slam it down as he had with the last one. One thing he had not yet grown accustomed to was how rapidly alcohol could effect a mortal body. The two large drinks were by no means enough to get him drunk, but certainly enough to feel it.

He waited until Loki was finished to say anything. ]

Shall we be off, then?

[ There is only one way for a creature of his kind to truly feel the effects of alcohol, and it isn't this way. But, Loki is still playing the innocent part, so he makes sure to smile a hint more, to try and at least sound a little bit dazed. But no colour rose to his cheeks, nothing that would give away the impression he was a lightweight. ]

I will follow your lead, my friend. [ His smile widens a bit more, and he gently tugs on Thor's arm as he slides off his chair. ]

[ He follows easily, glad to have a direction, something to act upon. It suited him far better than sitting around discussing matters. Once on his feet, he took the lead and headed for the door. ]

What manner of world do you feel would suit your tastes best? I have heard tell of everything from vast, unending fields of battle with an inexhaustible force of monstrous creatures, to those of such complacency it is easy to enjoy one's self and the company of others with relative ease.

I'm to follow suit very soon, myself!
