Well, the plus side is that if they decide we get to be happy? It's usually really happy. I mean, I've... gone through some rough times? But right now, I'm actually pretty well off.

Really. [He nodded.] I've got a pet dragon. And my ... um. My significant other and I are straightening things out. Everything's looking like it's going to end up okay.

... your significant other, huh?

[she smiles, just a little, and it's definitely a playful one.]

Well, that's good! Maybe things won't be as bad as Karkat thinks they are.

Yeah, I... I'm still tripping up on terminology? And really, I kind of think that I'm always going to be tripping up on terminology, because it's one of those things where no word really... feels right. [But then he paused, cleared his throat--] Not that there's... any reason why I should be, uh. Talking about this to someone I just met...

I don't-- I'm dating one of my coworkers? But I really don't like the word 'boyfriend.' It sounds... juvenile. [And it was one of his pet peeves, being thought of as the baby of the bunch. He was thirty now!]

-- ooh! [oh she blinks at that, she's never really met a boy with a boyfriend before. not that she minds! it's honestly pretty cute!]

Well, I think it sounds just fine, but, um, I guess I might be kind of weird for someone grown-up to say.

Especially when mine is in his forties. [But he sighed.] I'll... figure out a word I like eventually, I guess. And it's something he and I will have to talk about.

[But they had a lot to talk about. This subject, though, made him realise that he should ask--] How old are you, anyway?

[For the first time in his life, Spencer felt old. He blinked.] ...Wow. I'd... kind of forgotten that the age of thirteen existed. I seem to usually be around people older or younger.

[wannayiffyn]

Wow, really? All of my friends are about the same age, so it's kind of weird for me to see a grown-up again! I mean, it's been a long time since any of us saw any other humans besides each other...

[angustifolium]

[That piqued his interest.] Why haven't you seen any other humans?

[wannayiffyn]

[... her peppy mood fails slightly at that question.]

... everyone in the universe that we came from died. It got destroyed.

[Now that? That was hard to answer. He'd watched enough science fiction that his mind could envision a parallel universe being destroyed, but the main question that came to him was--] How?

It's... kind of a long story, and a whole lot of things happened. But the important part is that me and my friends made it out and got into a new one that we made, so... it's not so bad.

[except that her best friends all lost their families but well... ... at least she didn't really have family to lose?]

You... made your own universe.

[Again, that sci-fi background was kicking in, giving him possibilities (after all the most popular and most accepted multiversal concept included the idea that anytime anyone made a choice, another universe was created where that choice was made with a different outcome, and that meant he'd made thousands of universes in his lifetime) but the full question--

[That was diplomatic enough, he hoped - though it was hard to judge, what with the loss of a universe on the line.]

[she worries her lip with her buck front teeth... but then she smiles gently.]

Well... it's okay. I'm sure this new universe will be really amazing, after all the hard work we did to make it!

[angustifolium]

I could see that. [He nodded, trying to give encouragement.] I mean, in a new universe, you can make things work according to your rules...

That's right, no awful horrorterrors to tell us what to do!

[angustifolium]

I mean, I know if I were to make my own universe, I'd give myself wings. [Because how neat would that be? To be able to fly under his own power... He'd finally have a reason for being so thin.]

[wannayiffyn]

I don't think we can do that, but we don't really need wings, anyway!

[with that, she proceeds to pick herself up off of the ground, a bit of a goofy grin returning to her face.]

[angustifolium]

[And that got a look. Telekinesis? Antigravity? But he suspected it just came down to having control over the universe.] That's really neat.

Heehee, thanks! I like it, too! It makes it a lot easier to get around! Especially when you have something as big as a universe to explore.

[she flicks one of her doggy ears, pointing a finger at it.]

I got these, too, but they don't really do anything special. But I think they're cute!

And see, if you got those, maybe it's possible to get wings, too. [He chuckled. Okay, so maybe he wasn't too terrible with kids anymore. But he was still a little lost on what to talk about with them - especially now that he was aware of age as a factor.]
